Inaugural Jerome H. Stone Philanthropy Award for Alzheimer's Research Presented to Zenith Society

BOSTON, July 14, 2013 – The inaugural Jerome H. Stone Philanthropy Award for Alzheimer's Research was presented to the Zenith Society today at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference® (AAIC 2013®) in Boston. The Alzheimer's Association, the world's largest nonprofit funder of Alzheimer's disease research, is proud to establish this award recognizing the world's top philanthropists for actively engaging in changing the course of Alzheimer's disease through their generous commitment to research.

The Jerome H. Stone Philanthropy Award for Alzheimer's Research honors the legacy of a unique and determined individual who was among the first to call for investment in Alzheimer's research — Mr. Jerome H. Stone, in loving memory of his late wife Evelyn T. Stone. Mr. Stone is the primary founder of the Alzheimer's Association and is renowned for his vision, leadership and generosity in support of the Alzheimer's cause and of research in particular.

The Alzheimer's Association Zenith Society, an original example of venture philanthropy, was founded in 1990 by Mr. Stone. In its 23-year history, the Zenith Society has invested in cutting-edge, innovative Alzheimer's research around the world, validating key hypotheses, exploring the origins of Alzheimer's and genetics, developing therapeutic targets and advancing diagnostics and technology to find ways to treat and prevent the disease.

The Zenith Society has funded more than $30 million to more than 100 researchers worldwide. These Alzheimer's research studies have gone on to receive subsequent funding of more than $631 million from additional sources, demonstrating the quality and importance of the research selections this group has made over the years. Many of the 57 members of the Zenith Society are also significant contributors to additional Alzheimer's research institutions.

"It is particularly fitting that members of the Zenith Society are the inaugural recipients of this award. More than 20 years ago, it was Jerry Stone himself who asked fellow philanthropists to donate $1 million to promising Alzheimer's studies. That kind of investment was unheard of at that time and the results are the foundation of much of the science we have today," said Gerry Sampson, Chair, Alzheimer's Association Board of Directors. "It is especially poignant to present this award for the first time as we celebrate Jerry's 100th birthday this year."
