2006

July 2006
The International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ICAD) was held in Madrid, Spain and attracted nearly 5,000 researchers from around the world. Several key scientific findings were unveiled that may lead to significant diagnostic advances.

July 2006
We enhanced our African-American outreach efforts and developed new brochures especially for this community. Topics were brain health, caregiver stress, 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s and a clergy guide.

August 2006
More than 750 care professionals attended our Dementia Care Conference in Atlanta, where the second set of Dementia Care Practice Recommendations for Nursing Homes and Assisted Living were released.

September 2006
To mark World Alzheimer’s Day, thousands of Alzheimer advocates called the White House to urge President Bush to increase funding for Alzheimer research and to continue supporting care programs in the 2008 federal budget.

September/October 2006
With Memory Walk season in full swing, the Association’s national headquarters and chapter offices worked hard toward fundraising and awareness-building goals. Many of our offices reported record-breaking numbers for Memory Walk 2006.

November 2006
The annual Rita Hayworth Gala was held in New York City. In one of the most exciting moments of the evening, an anonymous donation of $1 million was made and helped to make the gala the most successful in its history, raising a total of $3.2 million.

December 2006
U.S. News & World Report ran a cover story about early-stage and early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The article included input from the Association’s Early Stage Advisory Group, our Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee, Public Policy and Public Relations teams.

2007

January 2007
The national Alzheimer's Association's Web site launched with a fresh look and easier navigation for our visitors. Chapter Web sites followed throughout the year with the same look and feel, allowing the Alzheimer's Association to have a unified presence on the Internet.

February 2007
The Association published 2006: The Year in Alzheimer Science that included major scientific breakthroughs from the past year.

March 2007
Nearly 500 advocates from 48 states visited Capitol Hill for our Public Policy Forum. The first Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report, which provided new prevalence statistics for the disease, was released at the Forum and received national media attention.

April 2007
The Champions consumer awareness campaign launched with a goal of educating the public on Alzheimer’s disease and recruiting 5 million Champions – one for every person living with Alzheimer’s.

April 2007
New data published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association estimated that the total worldwide cost of dementia care is $315.4 billion annually.

May 2007
Members of the Alzheimer's Association Zenith Society voted to increase its awards from a two-year, $250,000 grant to a three-year, $450,000 commitment.

June 2007
The Alzheimer's Association International Conference on Prevention of Dementia convened Alzheimer researchers from around the world in Washington, D.C. New global prevalence statistics were released, which stated that some 26 million individuals worldwide are living with Alzheimer’s.
