Our nation is only beginning to wake up to the looming long-term care crisis. The Alzheimer’s Association supports efforts to address the issue through public education and expansion of the Long-Term Care Partnership programs.

The DRA created a National Clearinghouse for Long-Term Care Information that will educate consumers about the limitations of Medicaid and provide information to help consumers choose among private long-term care financing options. The DRA also allows all states to implement Long-Term Care Partnership programs. These programs, which have been piloted in five states for more than a decade, permit people who are able to buy qualified long-term care insurance to keep some of their assets if at some future time they must rely on Medicaid for help with long-term care expenses.

Creative solutions like the partnership program and education to help people plan for their long-term care needs are an essential part of any solution to the challenge of long-term care financing. It is important that states and the federal government implement these programs.
