The Mid South Chapter offers several educational programs for families facing Alzheimer's and community members. Most of these programs described below are free of charge. Please keep in mind for most educational programs a RSVP is required. Please make sure to call 800.272.3900 to reserve your place or to see about scheduling one in your area.
Educational Programs
10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease
It may be difficult to know the difference between age-related changes and the first signs of Alzheimer’s. Early detection, diagnosis and intervention are vital because they provide the best opportunities for treatment, support and planning for the future. This hour long program helps people identify the 10 warning signs, the need for early detection and the benefits of getting a diagnosis.
The Basics of Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are not a normal part of aging. The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease is a workshop, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association, for anyone who would like to know more about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Support Group Facilitator Training
This day training is offered annually and as needed for anyone interested in starting a support group in the community. The training is free in the hopes that leaders will partner and affiliate with the Alzheimer’s Association in order to better serve caregivers in the community.
Living With Alzheimer’s - this program is for the person with Alzheimer’s, caregivers for all stages of the disease & early and young onset.
The diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease is life-changing and leads to many questions.
What will this mean for me and my family? How do I plan for the future?
Where can I get the help I need? Join us for this three-part program where you will hear from others who have been where you are. We will discuss what you need to know, what you need to plan, and what you can do as you navigate this chapter of your life.
Legal & Financial Planning
If you or someone you know is affected by Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, the time for legal and financial planning is now. Legal and Financial Planning for Alzheimer’s Disease is a workshop, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association, for anyone who would like to know more
about what legal and financial issues to consider and how to put plans in place.
Activity Based Alzheimer’s Care (Professional Series)
This program, designed for Activity and Therapeutic Recreation Professionals as well as others working with persons who have dementia/Alzheimer’s, and is worth 5 contact hours. Cost is $50. At the end of this program, participants will be able to:
• Describe OBRA requirements related to programming for persons with dementia
• Identify dementia related changes that impact quality of life
• Adapt program design and leadership techniques
Foundations of Dementia Care (Professional Series)
As you know, caring for individuals with dementia requires specialized skills and exceptional sensitivity. Our national training program, part of the Alzheimer’s Association Campaign for Quality Residential Care, provides care professionals with hands-on practices based on the latest research and expert evidence in the dementia care field. The program is supported by leading health and senior care organizations. Studies show that staff trained in dementia care provide a better quality of life for residents and have increased confidence, productivity and job satisfaction. The Alzheimer’s Association has been committed to improving care for people with dementia for more than 25 years. Trust us to provide your staff with unmatched training and care practices that will improve the residential environment for everyone. Cost $1200.
Alzheimer’s 101/Introduction to Dementia
This program is offered every third Monday of the month at the Alzheimer’s Association office at 5:30pm located at 326 Ellsworth Memphis TN 38111 or can be requested of the Alzheimer’s Association free of charge to be shared throughout the community in various settings such as churches, civic groups, or senior living communities, etc.
Lunch & Learns - These educational programs are open to family members and professionals alike with a variety of topics. Some are bring your own lunch and some may have lunch provided by the host facility.
