Director, Direct Marketing & Donor Services (Chicago)

General Summary

The National office, located in downtown Chicago, is seeking an individual for the Director, Direct Marketing and Donor Services role.



This position will provide leadership for a robust department, creating efficiencies that best serve both internal Association departments and external donors and constituents, providing a consistent and exceptional customer experience. Position responsibilities also include effectively supervising Donor Services to optimize gift processing operations, data integrity needs and donor recognition and stewardship support as well as the Association's organization-wide direct marketing program through direct mail, telemarketing, and internet initiatives to increase awareness and revenue and engage new constituents with the organization. In addition, ensuring seamless integration of national office and chapter activities in these areas is critical to success. The incumbent will be responsible for growing annually approximately $40 million in revenue and recruiting and retaining new constituents outside of revenue.

Essential Job Functions

Plan and implement direct marketing strategies to achieve the greatest return on investment;

Manage department budget; supervise execution of the annual marketing plan in order to accomplish revenue, reach and expense objectives. This includes:

 - Developing, leading and managing direct marketing staff and agency/agencies involved in direct marketing campaigns

 - Directing the editorial and graphics content of all direct marketing products to meet brand and message standards

 - Testing and implementing new strategies to expand constituent base and increase ROI

 - Providing technical expertise to all divisions and departments (i.e. constituent events, conference marketing, advocacy, etc.)

 - Participating in cross-functional team to develop and implement organization-wide intermediate gifts program ($1,000-$9,999)

 - Developing, creating and seeking out new and better ways to meet and exceed high performance standards of gift processing, constituent support through exceptional customer service and streamlining reporting and all inter-departmental needs as they relate to the constituents we serve. Including:

 - Offering ideas that may result in improvements in revenue generation or better services.

 - Leading organization efforts to accquire, retain and engage e-constituents across interest areas in the cause and the Alzheimer's Association.

 - Providing expertise to Planned Giving and implementing Planned Giving marketing strategies.

Minimum Requirements

*   Bachelor's Degree or higher in Direct Marketing, Marketing, Strategic Communications or a related field
* 7 - 10 years experience, preferably in a federated VHA environment in the areas below:
-   Providing vision and direction to a direct marketing agency, as well as developing and leading a team of direct marketing professionals
-    Problem solving and finding efficiencies to serve both internal departments and external constituents
-   E-marketing strategies, testing, and implementation
Cultivation, stewardship, and renewal strategies for donors at all levels
Setting strategies in copy, offers, packages and list selection
Establishing and managing a multi-faceted marketing plan and budget
Overseeing execution of the plan - must understand how to set up and read direct mail tests
-  Reading direct marketing results, and setting up metrics to keep track of whether plans are achieving the desired results
-  Presenting complex marketing activities in an easy to understand format, both in writing and verbally
Empowering staff to make decisions and problem solve, helping to identify efficiencies in their day to day tasks
-  Communicating with, servicing, and selling products to multiple clients
Keen understanding of how the donor database and donor service operations support fundraising goals and influences best practices
Knowledge of data base marketing and complex file segmentation strategies
Understanding of organization vision, mission, and strategy and experience engaging constituents in information, advocacy, donations, and referral.
* Certification from DMA as Marketing Professional is a plus.
