The Alzheimer's Association, Greater Iowa Chapter provides a variety of education, information and support services to persons with dementia, their families, health care professionals, and the community. The Program Specialist is primarily responsible for coordinating and conducting educational programs in the community and providing support and assistance to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and their family in the counties assigned to their geographic area. The Program Specialist also provides assistance and support to Development and Communications Coordinators in their areas of responsibility.
This position is located in West Des Moines, IA.
Essential Job Functions
Coordinates education to families, persons diagnosed with Alzheimer's and related diseases, health care professionals and community organizations.
Conducts outreach and builds working relationships with physicians, service providers, care facilities and other stakeholders who collaborate on Association initiatives.
Responds to information, referral, and care consultations using established resources and tools. Follows up as appropriate.
Coordinates an annual education conference in assigned territory.
Advises and assists Program and Event Coordinators and other staff in assigned territory to ensure successful implementation of the chapter's programs and services.
Promotes opportunities for others to partner with the Alzheimer's association through recruitment of advocates, referrals to Trial Match, volunteer opportunities and other organizational initiatives.
Works in conjunction with Development and Communications Coordinator to assure timely and effective public relations and marketing of educational support services and programs in assigned service area.
Remains knowledgeable and current in information related to Alzheimer's and related diseases as well as national, state, and local initiatives that affect the targeted population.
Provides initial training, coordination and support for volunteer support group facilitators. including those volunteer support group facilitators for Program and Event Coordinators.
Works with Program, Communications, and Development Directors to assure that requirements for grant-funded programs and services in the assigned territory are met.
Ensures new community resources and related events are submitted to helpline databases.
Maintains accurate records of program and event participation and other metrics.
Assists with the annual budgeting process; and manages activities within budgeted parameters.
Works with the Program Director regarding updates from the national office to ensure uniformity of materials and presentation content.
Submits timely and accurate records and reports, newsletter articles and other information as requested by the chapter staff.
Bachelor's degree in health care related field: nursing, gerontology, social work or related.
Three years experience in health care guiding, coaching, and supporting individuals and their family.
Understanding of the disease process and options for caregiver interventions.
Knowledge of community resources.
Ability to work with a wide range of people including persons with dementia, family caregivers, volunteers, legislators and public policy officials
Strong organizational skills to plan, implement and evaluate program initiatives.
Effective written and oral communication skills; strong public speaking skills.
Ability to listen effectively.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products, especially Word, Excel, Power Point and Google applications.
Experience in volunteer management and support.
Ability to work independently without daily, onsite supervision.
