Memory Walk 2008
The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk® is our national signature event and brings together family, friends, caregivers and concerned community members — who all want to make a difference. Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than $200 million to help those battling Alzheimer's disease.
Held annually in hundreds of communities across the country, this inspiring event calls on volunteers of all ages to become champions in the fight against Alzheimer's. This year, more than 200,000 participants will be on the move to end Alzheimer's. Join us for an experience you won't forget!

Santa Barbara Half Marathon
Dr. Don Graves has been running for 25 years. At the age of 74, Dr. Graves has logged 6 half-marathons and 3 full marathons as well as a number of 5 and 10Ks. On November 3rd he and took on a new challenge, running to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association and Alzheimer’s research. Dr. Graves volunteers as an Adjunct Professor at UCSB, and is currently working on a connection between cinnamon – which stimulates insulin production – and Alzheimer’s disease. With his family by his side, Dr. Graves completed the half marathon and raised over $9,000 for the Alzheimer's Association!
Town Hall Gathering
With more than 5 million people in the United States suffering the affects of Alzheimer’s disease, and a new diagnosis very 71 seconds, the Alzheimer’s Association will focused on the growing need for patient services, caregiver support, advocacy and research with a special Town Hall Gathering. The event was hosted by Dr. Loretta Redd, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association and co-presented by the Friendship Adult Day Services of Montecito. The panel discussion included representatives in the field of Alzheimer’s research, professional and family caregivers.
Moderator:
Loretta Redd, Ph.D. serves as Executive Director of the Central Coast Alzheimer’s Association. Loretta has her doctorate in Educational Psychology, specializing in terminal illness; she was a Captain in the US Air Force, and has been director of non-profit and for profit businesses. Prior to her leadership, she ran for Santa Barbara City Council, and has served on two boards of Commissioners for the City.
Panel Members:
Julian Dean, is the Program and Education Director for the Alzheimer’s Association, where he has served for over a decade. Julian has his MA in and has developed many innovative educational programs for professional and family caregivers, led support groups, coached many families through issues of caregiving, and co-authored the Association’s famous book: What Now? Caregiver’s Quick Guide and Resource Manual.
Dr. Eryn Eckert received her doctoral degree in psychology from Claremont Graduate University. Dr. Eckert has worked with geriatrics for the past ten years: for the County in Adult Protective Services and the Public Guardian’s Offices, and in geriatric care management. Dr. Eckert is currently Program and Family Services Director at Friendship Adult Day Services in Montecito, where she conducts intakes and assessments, provides care consultations, and leads Alzheimer’s disease support groups. Dr. Eckert has spoken at the local, state, and national level on issues pertaining to the geriatric population.
Dr. Robert Harbaugh is a noted neurologist with Neurology Associates of Santa Barbara. He is director of Cottage Hospital’s Clinical Neurophysiology Division. A graduate of UC San Diego medical school, Dr. Harbaugh completed fellowships at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and is a published author of professional journals. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Mrs. Dessiree Searl has been primary caregiver to her husband, Keith, who was diagnosed in 2002. Keith’s mother had died of Alzheimer’s in 1993, so his diagnosis “did not come as a big surprise, but it was devastating, nonetheless.” Desiree took advantage of the educational conferences, workshops, support groups and information and residential alternatives provided by the local Alzheimer’s Association. In June, 2007, she placed Keith at Villa Alamar, a facility for Alzheimer’s residents.

Orchid Carnival March 7, 2008
An Orchid Show Preview Reception Benefit for the Alzheimer’s Association, California Central Coast Chapter Inc., will be held Friday evening, March 7, 6:30-9:30. This elegant evening includes Central Coast wines, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, live music, a silent auction and an awards presentation. Attendees get the first selection of orchids for purchase, and will have the opportunity to talk with the vendors prior to the show opening to the general public.
In the spirit of Carnival we invite you to wear a mask or costume to add even more color and fun to the night. Tickets for the Preview evening are $40.00.
