9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Pre-conference: Transitions in Dementia Care: Finding the Path and Making a Way
9:30–11:30 a.m. Transitions in Alzheimer's Disease: Relationship to Origins, Management and Treatment
Barry Reisberg, New York University, New York, N.Y.

Dr. Reisberg will address the history of how we understand and interpret Alzheimer's, as well as discuss his groundbreaking work around the developmental ages of Alzheimer patients. Additionally, the session will examine evolving individual and caregiver needs; the impact of pharmacological interventions; and the science of managing Alzheimer's through its many transitions.

1–2:30 p.m. We're on this Ride Together: The Emotional Roller Coaster that is Alzheimer's Disease and Caregiving
Mary Austrom, Indiana University, Indianapolis, Ind.

Dr. Austrom will lead an interactive session on the emotional impact of Alzheimer's disease. While everyone has much to grieve as the person with dementia slips away, many families describe joyful aspects of the journey, as well. Dr. Austrom will offer insights into how professional caregivers can help families find moments of joy during the sorrow.

2:45–4:45 p.m. Successful Transitions for Residents and Families: An Organizational Model
Susan Gilster, The Alois Alzheimer Center, Cincinnati, Ohio

Dr. Gilster will discuss the transitions that occur both into and inside residential care settings. She will also introduce the elements of a successful organizational approach to care; describe practices that enhance individual transitions; and discuss how to build a sustainable culture that maximizes quality of life for all involved.
