The Central New York Community Foundation is commemorating the occasion with The CNY85 Giving Project. Members of the community can choose which project they believe is the most worthy of an $8,500 grant from the foundation. During the month of June, human services projects are open for voting. We want you to vote for the Alzheimer's Association, Central New York Chapter's proposal to train law enforcement and first responders in strategies in dementia safety strategies.
Our Project:
A person with dementia has gone missing. It is an all too frequent story and the ending is not always favorable. Wandering puts the safety of an individual with AD/dementia in jeopardy as more than 60% of those with dementia will wander. Training first responders– police, fire and ambulance corps- is a key component to safely locating missing persons with dementia. Proper training can ensure that they know the signs of AD/dementia & how to facilitate a safe return to their home. The unfortunate reality is that all state & local first responder units are facing huge budget challenges this year, & training will likely only come in low-cost/no-cost forms. With $8,500 the Alzheimer’s Association can train fire departments (paid and volunteer), police departments & ambulance corps & provide valuable reference material for them to use in the field in an effort to provide a happy ending to family whose love one wanders.
