Opening Keynote Address: 
Research Update 2010:  Latest Developments in Understanding and Treating  Alzheimer’s Disease

Gregory Jicha, M.D., Ph.D.

Associate Director and Clinical Core Director of the University of Kentucky Alzheimer's Disease Center
Director of the Telemedicine Cognitive Clinic for Rural Outreach
 
Dr. Jicha will discuss mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease and the latest research advances in understanding genetic, cellular and molecular aspects of the disease. He will explain the latest advances in detecting pre-clinical Alzheimer’s disease using imaging and biomarkers and ongoing clinical trials of disease-modifying agents.

Closing Keynote Address: 
Mindfulness and Provider Self- Care
  
Richard Sears, PsyD, MBA, ABPP
Dr. Sears is a psychologist in private practice and a core faculty member of the PsyD program at Union Institute & University, as well as Director of the Center for Clinical Mindfulness and Meditation. He has practiced and taught mindfulness for over 20 years.

Mindfulness involves learning to pay attention to and wisely work with our thoughts, bodily sensations, and emotions to prevent stress, anxiety and depression, and to improve overall well-being. Dr Sears will focus on how mindfulness can best be used for provider self-care.

Workshops

Workshop Session I  (9:45 a.m.-11:00 a.m.)

Workshop 1 – Understanding Legal Issues Associated with Dementia / Mary Ann Jacobs, Esq.
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to enhance their understanding of the legal issues that impact dementia care and decision-making. There will be discussion of competency, determination of incompetence, guardianship, financial exploitation, and role of various legal documents.  

Workshop 2 – Interventions for Today and Tomorrow: Strategies to Address Changing Behavioral Symptoms / Gregg Warshaw, M.D., Robert Cluxton, Pharm.D.; Michelle Angel, R.N.
This workshop will review the management of behavioral symptoms of dementia using an interdisciplinary approach. Panelists will address challenges identified by workshop participants. Workshop panelists and participants will engage in a discussion about possible approaches to maintain or improve function and quality of life for those affected by dementia.

Workshop 3 – Differential Diagnosis and other Dementias / Brendan Kelley, M.D.
This workshop will address Alzheimer’s disease and other dementing illnesses and differentiating factors in the diagnostic process. The benefits of accuracy in diagnosis on the development of an individualized plan of care will also be discussed.
 
Workshop 4 – Down Syndrome and Alzheimer’s Disease / Clarissa Rentz, R.N., M.S.N.
Workshop participants will gain understanding of the connection between Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome, symptoms of probable Alzheimer’s disease in the person with Down syndrome and the diagnostic process. Supportive interventions will also be discussed.

Workshop Session II  (11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m.)

Workshop 5 – Challenges of Caring for a Person with Down Syndrome and Probable Alzheimer’s Disease / Clarissa Rentz, R.N., M.S.N.
This workshop will address identifying triggers or causes of challenging behaviors and strategies for preventing or managing behaviors in persons with Down syndrome and probable Alzheimer’s disease. There will be discussion of family and provider challenges as they care for the person throughout the continuum of the disease process.

Workshop 6 – Palliative Care throughout the Disease Process / Douglas Smucker, M.D.
This workshop will address the goals and philosophy of palliative care and how it is integrated into the overall care process for patients with chronic diseases. Palliative care interventions for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias will be discussed.

Workshop 7 – Understanding Assisted Living Options / Mary Day, Managing Ombudsman 
Workshop participants will gain understanding of Ohio regulations for Assisted Living. There will be discussion of how to best help clients choose an appropriate assisted living option.

Workshop 8 – Early-Stage Dementia Experience / Anne Von Hoene, B.S., LSW
This workshop will provide participants the opportunity to learn about the lived experience of individuals with early stage dementia. A small panel of individuals who each have a dementia diagnosis will be asked to speak about their own experiences living with dementia. The facilitator will interview or prompt the panel to comment. Attendance at this workshop will be limited to the first 30 registrants.  

Workshop Session III  (1:30 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.)

Workshop 9 – Challenges of Hospitalization with a Dementia Diagnosis / Stephen Mueller, M.D.
Workshop participants will gain insight into the issues and challenges for people with dementia when faced with hospitalization. The unique aspects of decision-making that accompanies care needs of those with dementia as well as innovative programs for improving the hospital experience will also be discussed.

Workshop 10 – Clinical Assessment of Dementia / Timothy Sigward, Ph.D.
This workshop will provide an overview of the different types of dementia.  Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the components of a comprehensive assessment for dementia with specific emphasis on geriatric assessment and neuropsychological testing and outcomes of the assessment process.

Workshop 11 – Innovative Approaches for Dementia Programs in the Home / Julie A. Uhrig, RN
This workshop will address new ideas for engaging persons with dementia in a meaningful experience through Montessori Based Dementia Programming and Spaced Retrieval Techniques. The participant will learn use of meaningful activities to reduce boredom, frustration, anxiety and agitation. 
 
Workshop 12 – Managing Nutrition in Dementia Care / Robin Moler, M.S./CCC, Susan Scully, M.A./CCC, Sandra Casale, M.S./CCC
This workshop will address swallowing issues related to dementia, aspiration risks, swallowing evaluations, diet modification, use of a water protocol and oral care. Strategies to address eating difficulties associated with dementia and quality of life and ethical considerations related to feeding will also be discussed.

The Virtual Dementia Tour

Consider registering for The Virtual Dementia Tour. Through a variety of simulations, the virtual dementia tour attempts to promote a greater understanding of some of the challenges experienced by individuals with a dementing illness. 

If you want to experience the Virtual Dementia Tour, you must check this option on your registration form. Tour space is limited and slots will be filled in the order registration forms are received. You must be willing to leave the workshop session you are in for approximately 10 minutes at your scheduled time to participate in this experience. Your tour time will be given to you with your registration packet on November 12, 2010.

OHIO:

Activity Professionals - 5.45 Clock Hours approved by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals.

Social Workers, Counselors and Marriage & Family Therapists - 5.5 Clock Hours approved by the State of Ohio Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage & Family Therapist Board.

Nurses - 5 Continuing Education Contact Hours approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing through the OBN Approver Unit at the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing, Continuing Education Program, (OBN-011-93). Contact hours are valid in most states. Program # 101112-1

Nursing Home Administrators - 5 Course Hours approved by the State of Ohio Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators

Developmental Disabilities - 5 Continuing Professional Development Units approved through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities for the following classifications:  Adult Services/Day Habilitation, Investigative Agent, Service & Support Administration, Supt/Asst Supt (Services/Programs/Supports Stream), and County Board Members

KENTUCKY:

Activity Professionals - 5.45 Clock Hours approved by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals.

Registration Fees:

$115 per person (includes continental breakfast, lunch, materials, and CEUs)
Discounted Group Rates apply to facilities/agencies/organizations that send several professionals to the Symposium. The registration forms must be submitted at the same time and the attendees must be from the same organization. (Individuals from separate organizations cannot combine their registrations to get the group discount.)
 If an organization registers a minimum of 5 staff, the fee is $100 per person.
 If an organization registers 6 or more staff, the fee is $95 per person.
Family caregivers may attend the Symposium at a discounted rate of $55, unless the caregiver is also a professional who wants continuing education units. If CEU’s are needed, the caregiver must pay the full rate of $115.

Registration Deadline: Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 (Registrations will be accepted after that date only if space is available.)

Refunds: To receive a refund, a written notice of cancellation must be received by Friday, Nov. 5, 2010.  A $15.00 administrative fee will be deducted. Refunds will not be issued after Nov. 5.

Parking: Free parking is available at the METS Center.

Special Accommodations: For any special arrangements or accommodations while attending the conference, please contact the Alzheimer’s Association at (513) 721-4284.

Meeting Rooms: Room temperatures do vary.  Please bring a sweater or jacket to assure your comfort.
