Start a team

Forming a team for the Memory Walk can enhance your experience and multiply your impact on the fight against Alzheimer's. Together, as a team, you are a force much greater than what you can accomplish alone. Teams are the backbone of Memory Walk. Forming a team is a great way to raise money and share a common goal as a group!

Teams require at least five members and are usually made up of friends, family, neighbors and/or co-workers. Each team can pick their own team name. It can be anything! Most teams pick a name that has some connection to the person on whose behalf they are walking. Other teams choose to use their company’s name or another creative moniker that identifies the team members. Each team will also need a team captain. This person organizes the team and is the main liaison between the Alzheimer's Association and the rest of the team members. The team captain is responsible for communicating information to the team members, helping the team members set goals, making sure they are registered and deciding where they will meet the day of the event.

All registered team captains will receive a Team Captain Kit with helpful information and fundraising ideas for the Walk. The Team Captain Kit also includes posters, pledge envelopes and brochures.

Awards are given out to the top fundraising team, the most spirited team and the team with the best banner. All teams will get their picture taken at the Walk, so many teams decide to wear matching shirts or hats or carry balloons. The best thing about walking with a team is sharing the fun of supporting a great cause together.

Fundraising tools

Every walker has their own way of raising funds. Here are some suggestions that have proven effective:

  • Start a letter-writing or e-mail campaign. Mail the letter to your family, friends, and co-workers. Be sure you include your personal fundraising goal in the letter and the reasons why you are walking. Some walkers choose include a picture and discuss how Alzheimer’s disease has affected them personally. Personal letters have been one of the most successful ways teams and individuals have raised money in the past. It’s also a great way to publicize your involvement. Some people who you contact might want to be a part of your team too! If you need more ideas about the content of your letter, please give us a call and we can help you.
  • Host a fundraising party and ask people to pledge their support that night.
  • Create a buddy system. Ask a person who cannot walk to help collect donations for you.
  • Bring your sponsor envelope with you wherever you go. You will receive one in the mail as soon as you register to walk.
  • Host a bake sale, a raffle, a used-book sale, or a car wash and donate the proceeds to Memory Walk.
  • Ask people to contribute to Memory Walk instead of buying you a gift for your birthday or your anniversary.
  • Find out if your company has a matching gift program. Matching gifts can double your money!
  • Set a weekly fundraising goal for yourself and beat it!

Want to raise $200 in just 6 days?

Follow this plan!

Day 1:  Put in your own contribution of $25
Day 2:  Ask your spouse, partner or best friend for $25
Day 3:  Ask 2 relatives for $20
Day 4:  Ask 3 friends for $15
Day 5:  Ask 4 co-workers for $10
Day 6:  Ask 5 neighbors for $5

Forget-Me-Not Flowers

Another great way to raise money both individually and as a team is to sell Forget-Me-Not flowers. Flowers can be personalized with a name or message and can be hung on a wall or a door. When people see the wall of flowers supporting your team, they will want to support you too!

These small paper flowers can be sold at your place of employment, your school or any other place you want to publicize the Walk. We can provide you with as many flowers as you need at no cost. All we ask is that you raise at least $1 for every flower we give you and that you return any unsold flowers.

Please contact the Greater Cincinnati Chapter office at 513.721.4284 if you are interested.
