Start a Team

Forming a team for the Walk can enhance your experience and multiply your impact on the fight against Alzheimer's. Together, as a team, you are a force much greater than what you can accomplish alone. Teams are the backbone of the Walk. Forming a team is a great way to raise money and share a common goal as a group!

Teams require at least five members and are usually made up of friends, family, neighbors and/or co-workers. Each team can pick their own team name. It can be anything! Most teams pick a name that has some connection to the person on whose behalf they are walking. Other teams choose to use their company’s name or another creative moniker that identifies the team members. Each team will also need a team captain. This person organizes the team and is the main liaison between the Alzheimer's Association and the rest of the team members. The team captain is responsible for communicating information to the team members, helping the team members set goals, making sure they are registered and deciding where they will meet the day of the event.

All registered team captains will receive a Team Captain Kit with helpful information and fundraising ideas for the Walk. The Team Captain Kit also includes posters, pledge envelopes and brochures.

Awards are given out to the top fundraising team, the most spirited team and the team with the best banner. All teams will get their picture taken at the Walk, so many teams decide to wear matching shirts or hats or carry balloons. The best thing about walking with a team is sharing the fun of supporting a great cause together.

Creative Fundraising Events

Every walker has their own way of raising funds. Here are some special events you may want to consider:

  • Jeans or Casual Dress Day -If your school, organization or workplace has a strict dress code, opt for a day when people can donate a small amount (for example, $5) in exchange for the option to wear jeans or casual dress. To sign up, please visit: www.alz.org/casualforacause.
  • Spaghetti Dinner - Spaghetti is a low-cost meal that’s easy to make in large amounts - and everyone loves it! Some other fun, low-cost dinner options are pancakes and hotdogs. Add a twist and have a black-tie pancake supper. You can also make this a hot breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or brunch event.
  • Dollar Walk - Invite supporters to help pave your “Dollar Walk” with dollar bills. Outline your walk in a hallway or large room with colored tape. Use masking tape (preferably one that isn’t sticky enough to tear paper) to tape donated dollar bills as stepping-stones on your walk.

  • Yard Sale - One person’s trash is almost always another person’s treasure, which is why yard sales are such fun and successful events. Collect items from your team members and sell them to earn money toward your Walk fundraising goal!

  • Trivia or Bingo Night - A bingo or trivia game night is an easy way to raise some funds. Sell bingo cards for a few dollars each and get some prizes donated for the winners. You can host this event at someone’s home or at a local bar or restaurant.

  • Super Bowl/NCAA Tourney Grid - A Super Bowl grid is a quick way to score some fundraising dollars for your Walk!  Sell squares on your grid. At the end of the game, the person whose name is in the winning square gets a portion of the money collected. Remember to check your state’s gambling laws before trying this fundraiser!

  • Silent Auction - Collect items from local retailers, sports teams and restaurants for an auction. Combine a silent auction with a dinner or wine-tasting event.

  • Raffle - Ask a local business to donate goods or a service for a raffle. Some unique ideas include spa days, a GPS system, cooking classes or a weekend getaway. Remember to check your state’s gambling laws before trying this fundraiser!

  • Golf Tournament - Everyone loves a little healthy competition!  Local businesses can sponsor a hole and teams pay a fee to play.

  • Wine Tasting - Host a wine-tasting event at one of your favorite local restaurants. Guests purchase tickets which allow them to sample wine selections and learn about different varietals.  You can add a silent auction or raffle to this event to raise even more money. Remember to check your state’s gambling laws before trying this fundraiser!

  • Karaoke Night - Host a karaoke night at a local bar or restaurant. Attendees can donate to sing a song.  Spice things up a little and have people donate to get their friends on (or off) stage!

  • Craft Show - Get your team together, show off your artistic skills and make some money toward your goal! This is an especially great idea around the holidays. Sell snacks and treats to combine baked goods with your crafts.

  • Skating Party - Host a party at a roller-skating or ice-skating rink. Many businesses are more than willing to donate their facilities to nonprofit groups, especially at times that are slower for them.  You may also be able to get food and drinks donated or a portion of the proceeds from the food sales.

  • Bachelor/Bachelorette OR Service Auction - This event is a live auction and can be held alone or as part of a dinner party or wine-tasting event.  Auction off dates with eligible singles, or you can take it in another direction by auctioning off the skills and services of your team members. For example, auction off a gourmet dinner made by a great chef, or foreign language lessons from someone who is bilingual. Discover your teammates’ skills and talents and put them to use for a good cause!

  • Car Wash - Everybody’s car gets dirty!  Many of us hate washing our cars. This is a great way for people to get out of doing the washing themselves and is a great fundraiser. Or, mix it up a little and do a pet wash.

  • Partner Up With A Local Business NEW! - Many businesses have fundraising nights where arrangements are made for a specific date and a percentage of the sales are donated to charity.  Call or email for a list of current local businesses.

  • Donations2DollarsNEW! - In times like these, donors may not be able to dig into their pockets as they once could – but there are treasures buried throughout their home.  Donations2Dollars is an innovative way to turn items into cash.   Appropriate items are collected, conveniently dropped off at Donations2Dollars, are sold on eBay with 64% of the money sent to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati and then credited to YOUR walk team!  Email: diana.bosse@alz.org for more information or for a team starter kit.

Want to raise $200 in just 6 days?

Follow this plan!

Day 1:  Put in your own contribution of $25
Day 2:  Ask your spouse, partner or best friend for $25
Day 3:  Ask 2 relatives for $20
Day 4:  Ask 3 friends for $15
Day 5:  Ask 4 co-workers for $10
Day 6:  Ask 5 neighbors for $5

Forget-Me-Not Flowers

Another great way to raise money both individually and as a team is to sell Forget-Me-Not flowers. Flowers can be personalized with a name or message and can be hung on a wall or a door. When people see the wall of flowers supporting your team, they will want to support you too!

These small paper flowers can be sold at your place of employment, your school or any other place you want to publicize the Walk. We can provide you with as many flowers as you need at no cost. All we ask is that you raise at least $1 for every flower we give you and that you return any unsold flowers.

Please contact the Greater Cincinnati Chapter office at 513.721.4284 if you are interested.
