About professional training


The Alzheimer's Association is committed to helping professionals improve their knowledge and skills, build stronger teams and deliver better care to people with dementia and their families. Our training and education programs are geared to professionals working in both community-based and residential care settings.

Our programs and meetings have been attended by activity professionals, administrators, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers and staff trainers. Many of our programs offer CEUs.

Private Training programs

Trained staff provides dementia-specific training programs to assist nurses, nursing assistants, social workers, home health aides, nursing home administrators and family caregivers with developing the necessary, specialized skill set needed to effectively care for individuals with dementia.  CEUs are available upon request.

Connectons - Innovative Dementia Training

Innovative Dementia Training is a full-day training program providing 6 hours of continuing education for social workers and counselors.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
Dementia Overview

  1. Examine Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, their stages and treatments currently available.
  2. Describe Alzheimer's disease and other dementias including treatments and impact on person and family.
  3. Explain the importance of the person's lack of control over the disease.

Person Centered Care

concepts

  1. Identify and define person centered care and its importance to current care practice.
  2. Recognize the essential elements of person-centered care and how they impact care delivery.
  3. Distinguish the importance of person-centered care in dementia care.
  4. Understand how behavior is a form of communication for persons with dementia.

practice

  1. Apply new words for old “labels” frequently used to describe “difficult” residents.  Explore possible reasons for challenging behaviors.
  2. Identify care practices that demean or depersonalize individuals.
  3. Apply person-centered care principles to develop an action plan to implement new learning.

Team -Building a Vision

  1. Analyze the definition of team.
  2. Discuss a plan to implement a team mentality in to the work setting.
  3. Develop a personal action plan to use in the everyday work setting
  4. Review dementia care best practice recommendations.

Web-based training programs


CARES: A Dementia Caregiving Approach

This affordable, Web-based program has six one-hour training modules that are geared primarily to direct care workers, particularly nursing assistants. Each module uses text and streaming video to illustrate how to best care for people with dementia living in residential care settings. Topics include:

Dementia Care Training for Team Leaders

This program provides guidance for those who supervise others involved in the care of people with dementia: nurses, unit coordinators, administrators, activity directors or others in leadership positions. After this training you will be able to:

  • Identify and implement methods to facilitate teamwork.
  • Select and use improved communication and supervisory practices.
  • Identify techniques and deliver meaningful feedback to members of your team.
  • Recognize and create an environment that motivates staff.
