Welcome: Nathan Hooks, Board Member, Alzheimer’s AssociationMr. Nathan Hooks has been a Board Member since 2003. He also is the Chair of the African American Advisory Committee which strategies outreach and education in African American communities.

This session will overview obstacles faced in obtaining an early diagnosis due to disparities and/or cultural backgrounds. It will also discuss strategies both for families and health/community organizations for encouraging early diagnosis in minority communities, and opportunities that families, health or education organizations, communities and professionals can take with regards to awareness, caregiving and treatment.

An overview of palliative care and cultural competency both in families/patients and in healthcare professionals.
Monday November 16 – “Managing Behaviors and Dementia”
Michael Weitzner, MD -- Geriatric Psychiatrist, Kaiser Permanente, Highline Mental Health Center
This session will encompass an overview of the characteristics of different forms of dementia followed by a discussion of behaviors, and which might be more specific to one dementia vs. another. Also, different treatment approaches in relation to different cultures.
Monday November 23 – “A Culturally Competent Understanding of Dementia in Hispanics”
Jose M. Lafosse, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Psychology & Neuroscience, Regis University
This session will discuss in what ways Hispanic/Latin American cultural norms shape perceptions on dementia, and how families and professionals can communicate effectively cross-culturally?
Monday November 30 – Caregivers and Professionals panel and Closing
A moderator will guide this discussion of Q&A for family and professional caregivers who will talk about their experiences as caregivers. Finally, we will have some open time for mingling/discussion, and closure.
