Planning giving: Bequests and charitable gift annuities
Bequests and charitable gift annuities (CGAs) are two popular types of planned gifts that can provide for you and your family and also make a lasting contribution to the Alzheimer's Association.
Note: The Alzheimer's Association strongly encourages donors to work with their attorneys and financial professionals to determine which type of planned gift may be most suitable for their individual situation. Chapter staff will be pleased to answer any questions you or your advisor may have.
Bequests - naming the Alzheimer's Association in your will
The following language can be taken to your professional counsel:
"I [name] of [city, state, ZIP] give, devise and bequeath to the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association (Alzheimer's Association) [insert written amount of gift, percentage of estate or residuary of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose."
Earn more from your Certificates of Deposit (CDs)
Many people have money tied up in certificates of deposits. The current average rate of return on a five-year CD is between 1.99% and 2.5%.
If you are age 62 or older, instead of reinvesting in another CD when your current CD matures, consider using that money to establish a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) with the Alzheimer’s Association. Rates of return are higher and you receive an income stream for life.
Example: Mrs. Johnson, age 84, has $10,000 in a certificate of deposit and is earning $250 annually (based on a 2.5% rate of return). Her husband died of Alzheimer’s and she has a high regard for the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association. When Mrs. Johnson’s CD matures, she decides to establish a $10,000 CGA, and at age 84 her rate is 7.9%. That’s 5.4% higher than her CD rate!
She will now receive a payment of $790 each and every year for her life-time. Plus, she benefits from a charitable deduction of approximately $5,000, and a portion of each payment is tax-free; unlike the income from her CD, which is fully taxable.
For more information on current CGA rates please contact Howard Bloom at (860) 828-2828 or email@example.com. As always, we recommend you also check with your financial advisor.
