The Beginning of the National Alzheimer's Association

The Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association was incorporated on April 10, 1980, with a budget of $75,000 and businessman Jerome Stone as founding president. The seven founding chapters were Boston, Columbus, Minneapolis, New York City, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Seattle.

In 1980, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invested only $13 million in Alzheimer research. Then, in 1982, President Ronald Reagan designated the first National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Week. The Association founded more chapters and started its own research program. Things were beginning to happen.

The Alzheimer’s Association, today a multimillion-dollar organization, has been the catalyst and leader for a generation of advancements in Alzheimer research and care. Our organization’s achievements and progress in the field have given thousands of people a better quality of life and brought hope for millions more.

ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION – MIAMI VALLEY CHAPTER

Its roots are in a small group of family members who began meeting in 1979 to seek information about Alzheimer’s disease and to gain mutual support in coping with their affected loved ones. In 1983 the local chapter was granted member chapter status in the national association, which was and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

The Miami Valley Chapter originally provided formal service to Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble Counties. In 1998, the Chapter assumed formal responsibility for Shelby County. On October 1, 2000, the Chapter entered into a management agreement with the Clark -Champaign - Logan Chapter that then officially dissolved and became a branch office of the Chapter. At the end of 2005, the branch office was closed, and one staff member maintains an office in her home in Springfield.

The first chapter office was located in donated space at St. Leonard Center, and part-time staff person was hired to direct the expansion and development of operations. The Chapter now maintains its office at 3797 Summit Glen Drive, Dayton Ohio 45449. The chapter currently employs a staff of nine full time employees and two part time employees. The Chapter shares the vision of “A World Without Alzheimer’s” and the Mission of “Dedication to research for the prevention, cure and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders while enhancing care and support to the affected persons and their caregivers” with its parent organization.
