Learn all you can - taking the first steps for those newly diagnosed

Once the diagnois is given, learning all you can will prepare you to weather Alzheimer's and related dementias.  The earlier you know, the more options you have available.  Probably, you have more questions tahn answers.  "What should I expect?  Where do I turn for help?  How long will this last?" Start by learning about the stages adn what lies ahead and then contact the Miami Valley Chapter to hep you develop an individual plan for your family to weather Alzheimer's.

Information:

First, most families star by looking up information to help the along their journey.  Whether you are early in the disease process or further, we have information to help you weather Alzheimer's and related dementias.  Here are a few starters:

  • 24/7 HelpLine - You can call us 24/7 at 800.272.3900.  Find out where to start by calling a trained person who can connect you to the basic information to start your journey.  During regular business hours a staff at the Miami Valley Chapter will answer the call and during nights and weekends our National office answers the calls. 
  • Information packet - access our information and resource pack online to get started
  • Brochures on a variety of specialize topics - behaviors, communication, end of life issues, financial matters, caregiver stress
  • Web-site - browse around, start with the brain tour and then information about the disease
  • Caregiver Focus - Sign up for our monthly e-newsletter for caregivers

Education

Next, families look for further education and support to navigate through the disease, daily living/coping techniques, and accessing local resources like respite and dementia-specific programs.  We educate caregiver through normal education programs and through our support groups that meet throughout our nine counties.

  • Support groups - We offer over twenty groups for caregivers and two groups for people who are living with the disease.  Click on the link and select which group you will be attending.
  • Education Programs - We offer different education programs to help you along the disease process
  • Caregiver Series:  A program for new families and even those who want to keep up to date on new information.  Click on the link to learn more.

  • Assistance

    Some families, then, want to put together a personalized plan to help them provide the best care possible thoughout the disease.

    • Individualize plans - Family assistance staff develop individual plans over the phone, through home visits, or family meetings.  For your personalized plan, contact Julie Worley, Director of Family Assistance today at (937) 291-3332 or by email at julie.worley@alz.org.
    • Respite care - We can provide limited dollars for respite care for all nine counties (waiting lists might apply).
    • Safety Services - Medic Alert-Safe Return offers a safety bracelet.  Our staff are also able to do home safety checks and connect families to new technology that provides safety services.
