*The following is a list of fee-for-service, interactive professional education workshops, which are designed to equip professionals with the information and tools necessary to provide quality care to individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias in health care settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, adult day centers, home health and hospice agencies. Each participant receives reference materials, a certificate of participation and CEU’s where applicable.)

Trainings include modules for supervisors, nurses and other group leaders and modules for direct care workers. You may choose from classroom training or Web-based training.
Classroom training:
Foundations of Dementia Care (Developed from the Campaign for Quality Residential Care)
This training covers 18 hours in eight modules. The modules are designed with adult learning principles in mind and include both awareness and practice sessions.
For supervisors, nurses and other group leaders
§ Learning to lead - improve team-building skills, motivate staff, reinforce care practices
(3 one-hour sessions)
For direct care staff and supervisors
§ About dementia – understand dementia and behavioral approaches (3 one-hour sessions)
§ Enhancing mealtimes – increase food and fluid consumption (2 one-hour sessions)
§ Pain management – recognize and prevent pain (2 one-hour sessions)
§ Making connections – improve interaction with residents (2 one-hour sessions)
§ Understanding wandering – define safe and unsafe wandering and apply strategies to promote safe wandering (2 one-hour sessions)
§ Reducing Risk of Falls – understand risk factors and promote safe environments
(2 one-hour sessions)
§ Restraint-Free Care – identify underlying issues to foster restraint-free environment
(2 one-hour sessions)
*This training has been reviewed by the National Continuing Education Review Service (NCERS) of the National Association of Boards of Long Term Care Administrators (NAB) and approved for 18 clock hours and 18 participant hours. Licensed long-term care administrators should contact their individual regulatory board to review current continuing education requirements and determine course approval. It is also approved for Social Workers by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program, as well as for nurses through the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. The final installment of the campaign—Phase III: End of Life Care—was launched in August 2007 and covers all aspects of decision-making, communication, assessment and support strategies. Modules are in development.
Dementia Caregiving: A Search for the Right Way
This 7-hour training program covers:§ Overview of Dementia

*This training program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare toward the 6 clock hours of annual training required for Personal Home Administrators.
Activity-Based Alzheimer Care: Building a Therapeutic Program
This program was developed with some of the nation’s leading activity experts in dementia care to support care settings and caregiving staff in building therapeutic programs. Content and objectives are based on information and input from national focus groups, pilot programs, Association chapter representatives, and other national organizations.This 6-hour program teaches participants:
§ The fundamental components of activity-based Alzheimer’s care
§ To effectively examine assessment and care planning
§ To identify program design options and method for implementation
§ To find a variety of ways to evaluate new and current programs
§ To identify and implement the various aspects of teamwork
*This program has been pre-approved for 7 contact hours by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP). Professional CE certificates will be issued at the end of the program. This program has also been approved for .6 continuing education units (CEUs) through the American Therapeutic Recreation Association. There is an additional $10 fee payable to ATRA for this CEU transcript.

Psychosocial Needs of Alzheimer’s Individuals and Their Families
This 2-hour seminar seeks to help participants:
§ Recognize the psycho-social needs of the patient with dementia as it relates to aging
§ Identify family/caregiver issues and what they will encompass
§ Identify what families/caregivers need from a support system that will enable them to attend to their needs as well as the needs of their loved ones
*This training program is approved by the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors for 2 clock hours toward the annual training required.
Dementia and Intellectual Disabilities: A Guide for Families and Professionals
This 5-hour seminar seeks to increase participants’:
§ Understanding of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
§ Awareness of risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease in individuals with developmental disabilities
§ Awareness of care management of individuals with dual diagnosis
§ Awareness of behavioral changes in aging individuals with development disabilities
§ Awareness of environmental influences on function and behavior
§ Ability to know how to prepare “the team” for the change in environment needed
