What is a Champion

An Alzheimer’s Champion is anyone who takes action to learn more about the disease or gets involved with the Alzheimer’s Association.  The Alzheimer’s Association has enlisted well-known celebrities for a new public education campaign entitled Champions.  To localize this national campaign, the East Central Iowa Chapter has recruited several prominent community leaders throughout Eastern Iowa to help raise concern and thus spread a greater awareness for the disease.  Our long-term goal is to enlist 16,000 Champions which equals the number of East Central Iowans currently afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer's Action and Awareness Week, May 5th - 9th

As many as 5 million Americans are now living with Alzheimer’s disease and someone new is added to those ranks every 71 seconds.  This number is expected to grow to 16 million by 2050 as the 78 million Baby Boomers continue to age.

Great progress has been made on the research front that has the potential to fundamentally change the course of Alzheimer's.  Now is the time to MOVE people to action by raising their concern for the disease and awareness of the Alzheimer's Association as a leader in Alzheimer research, education, support and advocacy.

The Alzheimer's Association East Central Iowa Chapter, along with most major East Central Iowa communities, is setting aside a week to focus attention on this looming 21st century health epidemic.  This week long campaign has been declared Alzheimer’s Action and Awareness week and will begin on Monday, May 5th.  We invite you to join the movement and exercise the POWER of PURPLE on Friday, May 9th.  Display your concern by wearing as much purple, the Alzheimer's Association signature color, as possible.  Lend your VOICE, OPEN your mind, help MOVE our cause and ACT now by helping us to champion the cause in any way you can.

Then, show us your PURPLE POWER!  We want to feature you and your group in our newsletter.  Send photos of your business, school or group and how you went purple on Friday, May 9th to lindsey.driscoll@alz.org.
