Annual Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Education Conference 

The Alzheimer's Association Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Education Conference will take place at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center, located at 7725 Kirkwood Blvd. SW in Cedar Rapids.     

Keynote Speaker: David Troxel

David Troxel, M.P.H., author of The Best Friend's Approach to Alzheimer's Care will be presenting four lectures at this year's conference. David Troxel is an internationally know expert in Alzheimer's and memory care. He's best known for his work with residents and families. David holds a Masters Degree in Public Health from Rutgers Medical School. During the 25 years he has worked in the field, he's also served as an Executive Board member of the American Public Health Association and the Ethics Advisory Panel for the US National Alzheimer's Association.


David's "Best Friends Approach" is build on a seemingly simple premise: that what people living with memory loss need most is a friend - a best friend. David teaches caregivers how to understand and fulfill this "Best Friends" role, including special caregiving techniques and tools.

Medical Keynote: Dr. Susan Schultz

Dr. Susan Schultz is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She joined the University of Iowa faculty in 1995, and has conducted research on the treatment of dementia and psychosis in late life, as well as brain imaging in persons with memory decline. Dr. Schultz is on the Executive Board of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry and she is the Associate Director for Clinical Research for the University of Iowa Center on Aging. She is a Deputy Editor for the American Journal of Psychiatry and also serves on the FDA Psychopharmacologic Drugs Advisory Committee as well as numerous other national committees addressing late life mental health.

2011 Excellence in Caregiving Awards

The Excellence in Caregiving Awards recognizes family caregivers, organizations, and professionals who serve individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.  Winners will be announced at the Annual Alzheimer’s Association Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Education Conference on August 11, 2011.
