"GOOD" CHOLESTEROL MAY BE GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN, TOO

Results of a study published in the December 2010 issue of Archives of Neurology suggest that higher levels of "good" cholesterol (called high-density lipoprotein or "HDL") are associated with lower risk of late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers examined 1,130 elderly individuals in Northern Manhattan, New York, who were free of cognitive impairment at the beginning of the study. They found that people with higher levels of HDL were less likely to get either probable or possible Alzheimer's disease than those with lower HDL levels.

This study is consistent with the growing body of research that suggests a strong link between heart health risk factors (including blood pressure level, cholesterol level, diabetes and weight) and late-life risk of Alzheimer's disease.

That said, more needs to be learned about this complex issue. The relationship between cholesterol levels and Alzheimer's needs further investigation. In particular, we need long-term observational studies — like the Framingham Heart Study — to learn more about possible risk factors for Alzheimer's disease over the course of lives and generations. And we need controlled clinical trials to know for certain if changing lifestyle or intervening with medicine can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's or change the course of the disease.

ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION INVOLVEMENT

Ultimately, solving the Alzheimer crisis is contingent upon having a comprehensive, coordinated national strategy that addresses all Alzheimer related issues, including care, services, and the chronic underinvestment in research. The Alzheimer's Association supports passage of the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA), which would develop a coordinated federal plan to address Alzheimer's — something that the government currently doesn't have. The Senate recently passed NAPA (S. 3036) and a vote is expected this week in the House of Representatives (H.R. 4689).

Tell Congress to pass NAPA. Urgent action is needed to ensure that NAPA passes this year! Make your voice heard. Send a message to your representative.
