2007 AWARE Luncheon

History

A.W.A.R.E.  is a support organization of the Greater Dallas Chapter and shares the same purposes as the Chapter.  Proceeds from the annual luncheon and other projects help fund Alzheimer's education, research, support and guidance for the Alzheimer's families in the Chapter's service area, and political advocacy for medical, social and financial needs of families.

Since its inception in 1987, AWARE has become a powerful fundraising organization promoting Alzheimer's awareness and financial support for its parent organization, the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Dallas Chapter.

In 1987, the Greater Dallas Chapter's Board of Directors led by the late Mr. Fred Sherman, recognized a need for additional support services to area families who were coping with Alzheimer's Disease.  Mr. Sherman and Board members outlined the public awareness and financial resources necessary to meet the goal of increased services.

Board member Mrs. Evelyn Ponder suggested the formation of an organization of women who would sponsor an elegant fundraising event that would provide both community visibility and additional dollars for the Greater Dallas Chapter.  With little more than a compassion for those struggling in the battle of their lives against Alzheimer's disease, and a desire for positive changes, AWARE was born.

Mrs. Cyndy Hudgins was elected as the organization's first president and within days, the first AWARE Luncheon and Fashion Show, chaired by Ms. Anita Sampels, was conceived.  Other founding members, including Nancy Nelson, Ruth Sharp Altshuler and Billie Leigh Rippey, were instrumental in the success of the first event.  Mrs. Ponder and Mrs. Hudgins were recognized in 2005 by the national Alzheimer's Association for creating AWARE.

Today, AWARE is one of the most prestigious organizations in Dallas.  The organization has produced progressively more financial support for the Greater Dallas Chapter in each of its twelve years and has gained national recognition by setting an example that Alzheimer's Association Chapters throughout the country have emulated.
