 Alzheimer’s Association® to Train 17 Community Representatives to Expand Services in the African-American Community
Because African-Americans are about two times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than Caucasians, and in honor of Black History Month, the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter is partnering with Chicago State University to train 17 PharmD candidates to deliver much needed programming to the African-American Community.

Elena Godfrey, Care Navigator for the Alzheimer’s Association®, Greater Illinois Chapter recently received her Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) status - the highest licensure a social worker can achieve in the state of Illinois.

 Know the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's Disease Before Heading Home for the Holidays
The holiday season is a time families gather and spend quality time with loved ones. It is also a time that can raise questions about the cognitive health of aging family members. With Alzheimer’s disease in particular, it is important to know what it is and what it is not normal aging.  Below is a list of warning signs along with examples of normal aging.  If you notice any of the warning signs in your aging family members, it is recommended that you see a doctor.

The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter is seeking 40 artists to create works of art at the 2012 Unforgettable Art: An Affair for Alzheimer’s event to be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Prairie Street Brew House, 200 Prairie Street, Downtown Rockford.

 Alzheimer’s Association offers new tools to aid difficult driving conversations
Driving demands quick reaction time and fast problem solving. Due to the progressive nature of the disease, every person with Alzheimer's will eventually become unable to drive. The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that families discuss driving before a crisis, ideally while the person with Alzheimer’s is still able to participate in the conversation and decision-making process.

On Wednesday, October 26, 2011 Alzheimer’s Advocates delivered more than 4,600 signed advocacy cards to Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) requesting his help to make Alzheimer’s disease become a national priority. Cards were signed and collected at 18 Walk to End Alzheimer’s events throughout Illinois.

 Alzheimer’s Association & Continuing Education Institute of Illinois partner for regional Alzheimer's Conference
The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter and the Continuing Education Institute of Illinois will be offering the first-ever Regional Alzheimer’s Conference. The event will take place on Wednesday November 16, 2011 at The Pavilion Walk on 1602 Sioux Drive in Marion, IL 62969. Registration and breakfast commences at 8:00 a.m. and adjournment at 4:30 p.m.

 Alzheimer’s Conference Reaches out to African-American Community
African-Americans are two to three times more likely than Caucasians to develop Alzheimer’s disease. To increase awareness the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter in partnership with the South Side Dementia Consortium will present You Are Not Alone: Supporting Caregivers of Loved Ones with Memory Loss Conference, Saturday, October 15 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Kennedy-King College, 740 West 63 Street in Chicago.

 Public hearing Illinois Faces Alzheimer’s
On Monday September 26, 2011 Representative Davis has scheduled a hearing to receive updated information and recommendations for ensuring that Illinois will be able to respond to the dramatic rise in the numbers of people who will be affected by Alzheimer’s disease.  The hearing will take place at 11:00 a.m. at the Michael A Bilandic Bldg., 160 N. LaSalle St., 6th Floor, Room C-600, Chicago, IL.

 Media advisory: Alzheimer's stakeholders invited to National Alzheimer's plan input session
WHAT: Building on the Alzheimer’s Association’s commitment to provide platforms of engagement for those directly affected by Alzheimer’s disease, the Association’s Greater Illinois Chapter will hold a public input session to listen to views and perspectives of stakeholders in the Alzheimer’s community about what a National Alzheimer’s Plan should include. This input session is one of many taking place across the country this month. Recommendations and comments expressed will be collected, analyzed and presented to officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the agency responsible for creating a national plan that will address the rapidly escalating Alzheimer’s crisis and coordinate federal government efforts.
