About Professional Training

 

The Alzheimer's Association is committed to helping professionals improve their knowledge and skills, build stronger teams and deliver better care to people with dementia and their families. Our training and education programs are geared to professionals working in both community-based and residential care settings.

Our programs and meetings have been attended by activity professionals, administrators, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers and staff trainers. Many of our programs offer CEUs.

Train-the-Trainer Program

IDPH & ATAC Session 2

This training is in compliance with Public Act 91-744 requiring the Illinois department of Public Health to establish training criteria for nursing home & home health employees who provide direct care to persons with Alzheimer’s disease & related dementia. Topics covered include understanding dementia, communication strategies, teaching techniques, conducting in-services, dealing creatively with challenging behaviors, & activity based care.

Making Mealtimes Matter, Gentle Approaches to Bathing, Preventing Falls

Learn to draw on knowledge of residents’ needs and preferences to improve nutrition & hydration. Learn strategies to make bath time a more pleasurable experience & reduce the risk of falls and preserve mobility. The early registration fee is $75 before March 10th or $85 for regular registration. CEUs will be available for $10.

Activity Based Alzheimer's Care (ABAC)

This workshop is designed for Activity Professionals with a basic understanding of Alzheimer’s disease whose primary job responsibilities include activity programming, design, and implementation, & working with individuals with memory loss in all care settings. The early registration fee is $75 before May 5th or $85 for regular registration. CEUs will be available for $10.

Half Day: Train the Trainer Program

This new and innovative staff training program uses case studies, games, role playing & group exercises to bring four in-services alive for direct care staff. Topics include Making Mealtimes Matter, Understanding Exit-Seeking Behavior, Recognizing and Reporting Pain, & Communicating through Storytelling. The early registration fee is $50 before November 10th or $60 for regular registration. CEUs will be available for $10.

Full Day: Train the Trainer

The Alzheimer’s Association has developed a new Train-the-Trainer program for staff of nursing homes, assisted & supportive living facilities, adult day care centers, & home care agencies. Objectives include: explain the difference between “old culture” & “new culture”, explain why resistive behavior occurs & how to avoid or minimize it, describe 3 ways to make bathing a pleasurable experience, understand how dementia changes expressions of intimacy & sexuality, describe 3 ways to prevent or minimize the risk of falls, understand the difference between spirituality and religion, identify at least 2 ways we can use music to reach people with dementia, & provide better care for someone in the end stages of dementia. The early registration fee is $75 before February 2nd or $85 for regular registration. CEUs will be available for $10.

The Alzheimer’s Association has developed a new Train-the-Trainer program for staffs of nursing homes, assisted and supportive living facilities, adult day care centers, and home care agencies. This new and innovative staff training program uses games, role playing, and group exercises to bring 12 in-services alive for direct care staff. Participants receive a scripted manual, Power Point slides, and handouts. The Train-the-Trainer program is taught in a day-and-a-half format.

This program will teach you how to effectively deliver solid and interactive content to your staff on these eight topics:

2. Reducing resistive behavior
3. Bathing
4. Intimacy and sexuality
5. Preventing falls
6. Spirituality and religion
7. Making connections through music
8. Compassionate care at the end of life

First Responders Program

First Responders is a new train-the-trainer program designed to increase awareness and understanding of Alzheimer's disease. The program provides an overview of the disease, and discusses wandering, abuse and neglect, driving, shoplifting, firearms and disaster preparedness.

Professional Inservices Available

Our agency is equipped to provide 20 inservices for professionals of nursing homes, hospitals and other health care agencies. Our programs provide healthcare professionals the techniques needed to train their direct care staff who provide dementia care in skilled nursing and home health care settings. Inservice fees are $100 per one-hour program plus mileage. We can tailor a series of 10 inservices at a reduced rate. Contact the office in your area for more information.

New Support Group Leader Training

Volunteer Support Group facilitators provide a valuable service to the agency. Individuals interested in becoming support group leaders should attend this training. Program will focus on disease overview, successful support group tips, support group dynamics and agency policies. A manual will be provided. Call the Peoria office for more information.
