The Alzheimer’s Association is proud to bring Anne Basting to Indiana as the keynote speaker for the Fall Caregiver Conferences in Bloomington and Indianapolis on November 5th and 6th , respectively. Anne Basting, Ph.D. is the Director of the Center on Age & Community and an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre at the Peck School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Basting has written extensively on issues of aging and representation, including two books, Forget Memory: Creating better lives for people with dementia and The Stages of Age: Performing Age in Contemporary American Culture. Basting received her Ph.D. in Theatre Arts from the University of Minnesota.  She continues to direct the TimeSlips Creative Storytelling Project, which she founded in 1998, and makes numerous presentations about creativity and aging across the nation.

Her keynote presentation at both conferences, Forget Memory:  Try Imagination…, will capture the audience’s attention and spur their creativity. Dementia entails loss - this we know.  But loss is not the only story. Basting focuses the lens beyond the loss to reveal the potential of the imagination and creative engagement to nurture relationships, encourage expression, and build community and hope in the dementia experience for both care providers of all levels and people with dementia. A playwright and scholar, Basting will demonstrate the power of creative engagement by sharing the core philosophies and impact of a variety of model programs around the country.

Basting will also lead breakout sessions in the afternoon at both conferences.  During the professional breakout Creative Engagement for Professionals and Groups, she will talk about how creative storytelling, movement, music and visual arts are powerful tools to connect with our inner creative beings as well as residents in long-term care settings, or participants in adult day programs.  She will go into detail about how to set up, hold, and maintain such programs.  During the family breakout Creative Engagement for Families, she will go deeper into exercises that she alluded to in her keynote presentation.  The main focus of the session is how to redefine and reframe the time you spend together, looking at how to embrace the now through creative engagement and how to involve the family in the “now” when the heat of fear and awkwardness keeps friends and family away.

Both conferences are designed for professional and family caregivers and a general schedule can be found below:
