Get the emotional support you need

If someone you know and care about is living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, there is something you can do to help them and yourself. Plan to visit an Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group this month.

Support groups meet monthly to provide caregivers with an opportunity to share their experiences and receive support from others coping with Alzheimer’s disease. There is no cost or commitment to attend. If you have questions about support groups in general, please call the Helpline at 800-272-3900. NOTE: Professionals without an afflicted family member should call the facilitator prior to the meeting for permission to attend.

If you have Early-Stage Alzheimer's

During the spring and fall, the Alzheimer's Association offers a program for individuals experiencing early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (or a related dementia), and their care partners. Learning Together, a six-week program held in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, provides education, support, and socialization among peers who face similar circumstances, in a tolerant and accepting atmosphere. Information about legal and financial planning is offered as well as the latest medical and research updates.

To participate, individuals must have a physician’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (or a related dementia) and acknowledge the disease. Group participants should have some communication skills and a desire to attend the program sessions. A care partner (spouse, adult child, or friend) will also be expected to attend. A screening process will take place prior to the start of the program.

For more information about the Indianapolis program, please contact Denise Saxman at denise.saxman@alz.org or 317-575-9620. For more information about the Fort Wayne program, please contact Jackie Custer at jackie.custer@alz.org or 260-420-5547.
