Music and Memory is a New York-based program that was recently featured in the movie Alive Inside (watch the trailer here). The film explores the power of music. Chapter staff work with elder care professionals to set up personalized music playlists, delivered on iPods and other digital devices, for those in their care. The songs tap deep into memories and can bring energy to those with dementia.
Research shows that when music is introduced in elder care facilities, residents are happier and more social, and that relationships among staff, residents, and family deepen. There is growing evidence that a personalized music program gives professionals one more tool in their effort to reduce reliance on anti-psychotic medications.
You can help the Heart of America Chapter make music happen for those with dementia in our community by donating an iPod (new or used), an iTunes gift card, iPod chargers, noise reduction headphones that cover the ears, or CD's. The CD's can be any genre and type, but popular requests include gospel, music from classic musicals, big band music, and music from the 40's and 50's.
Cash donations specifially to the Heart of America Chapter Music and Memory program are also appreciated.
