Chuck

My name is Chuck. My sweetheart has Alzheimer's. We have been together almost 52 years, 47 of those years as husband and wife.

Irma, my wife, is a retired registered nurse. She has spent most of her life caring for others. She not only has taken care of me, but raised four children as well. Now I am trying to return some of that love by taking care of her.

She has had Alzheimer's for the past three years. We love to walk, but she is quickly losing the ability to do so. We don't have any real friends, and our children don't live near us, so we are pretty isolated.

We have found that people are very indifferent about people with Alzheimer's. We have encountered much opposition along the way. So "we keep on keeping on" as my sweetheart would say. I`ll continue to care for her as long as I can. But then what is there for us?
