Conference Program (PDF)

Thank you for attending the 2010 Medical Symposium:  Influencing the Landscape of Dementia Care

This Symposium was held in conjunction with the Dementia Conference and is for dementia experts and thought-leaders such as physicians, neuropsychologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other dementia medical team members.

Symposium Overview

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a prevalent and growing issue and is being called a certain healthcare epidemic. The symposium, which was held in conjunction with the all day A Meeting of the Minds Dementia Conference 2010 at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, MN gathered leading experts to present and lead discussions around early diagnosis and other timely issues related to Alzheimer’s disease. The symposium is typically held on a Saturday in mid-March and registration opens in early January.

The Medical Symposium brings together experts and champions in the area of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease who understand and are working towards solutions for the looming dementia epidemic. Clearly, progress has been made in diagnosing and treating patients earlier in the course of their disease, but what does this ultimately mean?

Advances in research offer a glimpse of the future of Alzheimer’s diagnostics and potential primary and secondary interventions. Yet, what exactly is the vision of a healthcare system that can provide quality diagnosis, treatment and care to the 10 million baby boomers expected to have this disease?

Drawing on the expertise of practitioners and thought leaders who attend the Symposium, a lively, relevant and timely discussion will guide the afternoon. Discussion leaders will highlight current and innovative models in dementia diagnosis, and treatment, as well as existing challenges and pitfalls of dementia care. A published paper on the social and fiscal implications of the movement towards early diagnosis and intervention will be presented by the authors in order to elicit thoughts on its potential impact on current and future practice. Feedback from this discussion will be funneled into current and future Alzheimer’s Association advocacy and dementia care reform efforts.

Thanks to the Minnesota Medical Director's Association for their generous support of the Medical Symposium.
