Our history

Founded in 1980, the Alzheimer's Association is the only national volunteer organization dedicated to conquering Alzheimer's disease through research and providing education and support to individuals with Alzheimer's disease, their families, caregivers, and the community. The National Association is the leading funding source for Alzheimer's research after the Federal government. In addition to assisting people with the disease and their families and funding research, the Association works to increase public understanding and support through education, advocacy, public awareness and fundraising.

The Montana Chapter provides services throughout the state of Montana including care consultation, education, information and referral, support groups, and the Safe Return Program.

The Montana Chapter is to be governed by a policy-making board of fifteen community representatives - with no less than one from each of the five regions and no more than four per region except in special situations that will be addressed case by case by the board. The Treasurer is elected as a director at large and the Western Region Field Director or Association Vice President is to be a voting member because we are considered an office rather than a chapter. This makes a total board of seventeen members.

Advisory Councils may be established to assist the Chapter in providing an expert council and by increasing public awareness in the Chapter's five regions. A medical advisory board will not be established at this time however, the Association hopes to one day have an advisory board to provide outreach to the medical community as well as information on local research.

The day-to-day activities of the Chapter are administered by the Chapter's staff. They are assisted by a committed and energetic group of volunteers.
The Montana Chapter is overseen by the National Alzheimer's Association. Our relationship requires that we achieve the organization's standards and pay an affiliation fee with revenues raised by the local chapter.
