In 2004, the Alzheimer’s Association presented its inaugural gala in the nation’s capital to raise the profile of Alzheimer’s and its devastating toll on America’s families and to recognize advances in Alzheimer research.  In just four years, the National Alzheimer’s Gala has raised $6 million for cutting edge research and critical support services for individuals, families and caregivers facing the daily challenges of the disease.

In addition to raising money for caregiving and research, the Gala aims to raise the profile and significance of Alzheimer’s disease among Washington policymakers.  Prominent Gala participants have included First Ladies Laura Bush, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barbara Bush, and Rosalynn Carter; former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich; Sen. Susan Collins; Sen. Tom Harkin; Sen. Barack Obama; Rep. John Boozman; Rep. Ed Markey; former Presidential Chief of Staff Andrew Card; former Assistant to the President and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Michael Deaver; Eunice Shriver; Sargent Shriver; Mark Shriver; MPAA chairman Dan Glickman; Walter Cronkite; Chris Matthews; Kathleen Matthews; Terry Moran; Jean Smart; Phyllis George; and David Hyde Pierce.
