History

In Dallas in 1987 the Greater Dallas Chapter's Board of Directors recognized a need for additional support services to area families who were coping with Alzheimer's disease. The Board outlined the public awareness and financial resources necessary to meet the goal of increased services.

Board Member Evelyn Ponder suggested the formation of an organization of women who might sponsor a fundraising event that would provide both community visibility and additional dollars for the Alzheimer's Association. With little more than compassion for those struggling in the battle of their lives against Alzheimer's disease, and a desire for positive change, the Alzheimer's Women's Association for Resources and Education (A.W.A.R.E) was created.

Cyndy Hudgins was elected as the organization's first president and within days, the first A.W.A.R.E luncheon and Fashion Show was conceived. Since its inception in 1989, A.W.A.R.E has become a powerful fundraising organization, promoting awareness and providing financial support for the Alzheimer's Association.

In 2006, the national Alzheimer's Association recognized Cyndy Hudgins and Evelyn Ponder at a reception held in their honor in Chicago as part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Alzheimer's Association.

In recent years, the national Alzheimer's Association was proud to share their success story with other chapters, and today, there are A.W.A.R.E. organizations raising funds for the Alzheimer's Association chapters in Colorado, Greater Georgia, Houston, Northwest Florida, San Antonio, Southeast Florida and in 2006 the National Capital Area Chapter in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.

Fundraising Activities

The Annual Monuments Luncheon, benefiting the Alzheimer's Association National Capital Area Chapter is held each fall at a DC hotel. This event, which includes live and silent auctions, is attended by more than 400 Washingtonians. A prominent Washingtonian is honored. There are numerous volunteer opportunities, including table sales, auction item procurement, program development, addressing, accounting, and set-up the day of the event.

The Holiday Card Program allows donors to make a contribution to A.W.A.R.E. in lieu of a gift they might otherwise choose to give. An elegant card is sold for $25 each and sent to the donors recipients by A.W.A.R.E. volunteers.
