April 19, 2011 - New criteria and guidelines for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease have been published — for the first time in 27 years — by three expert workgroups spearheaded by the Alzheimer’s Association and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). April 7, 2011 - Legislation introduced to improve diagnosis of Alzheimer's and strengthen care planning - HOPE. As the world's leading voluntary health organization advocating for Alzheimer's care, support and research, the Alzheimer's Association applauds the introduction of the Health Outcomes, Planning, and Education (HOPE) for Alzheimer's Act (S. 738/H.R. 1386), which seeks to improve detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias and provide access to information and support for newly diagnosed individuals and their families. January 21, 2011 - Alzheimer's Association® statement on florbetapir PET amyloid imaging. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Peripheral and Central Nervous System Drugs Advisory Committee did not recommend approval of florbetapir (Amyvid, Lilly/Avid) injection for imaging amyloid plaques based on the currently available data. At the same time, the committee did vote to recommend approval of florbetapir conditional on development and implementation by the company of a training program for users on how to accurately and consistently read the scans. January 18, 2011 - Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to consider Alzheimer's test for living patients. The FDA will consider a new diagnostic test that may be able to identify amyloid plaques through PET scans – a type of brain scan – on living patients. Read more here.
