Juli Inkster Has Winning Year and Honors LPGA Legend Patty Berg
Calls on others to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association A Round to Remember™
WEST PALM BEACH (Nov. 21, 2006) – Juli Inkster, current LPGA player and Hall of Fame member, announced at the ADT Championship her continued commitment to honor the late Patty Berg through the Alzheimer’s Association A Round to Remember™ program. On Nov. 15, she presented a donation at the 18th hole of Trump International to the Alzheimer’s Association. This reflects a $500 contribution from Genworth Financial for every round in which Juli hits under par. She successfully achieved 42 rounds under par this season, which amounts to $21,000.
Juli has had one of her best seasons. She achieved nine top-five performances, and won the Safeway International in March at Superstition Mountain, AZ. This year Juli launched Round to Remember to honor Patty Berg. During her golfing career, Patty Berg helped co-found the LPGA and served as its first president, while amassing 60 career victories, including 15 major championships, and earning induction into the LPGA Tour’s inaugural Hall of Fame class in 1967. She died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease on Sept. 10 and had publicly revealed her battle with the disease back in December 2004.
“I am thrilled we were successful in launching Round to Remember this year,” said Juli Inkster. “This past July, at the U.S. Women’s Open, we presented our initial check to the Alzheimer’s Association and highlighted Patty’s impact on women’s golf. Several of her LPGA friends conducted a golf clinic in her honor and called Patty on their cell phone. This was a very memorable event for us.”
Patty shared her thoughts with us in a letter afterward, writing: “And I’m sure I needn’t tell you how very much I want the Round to Remember program to play a role (I hope a significant one) in raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association, the work of which has my wholehearted support. It is, as you know, also a personal thing, and while it’s probably too late for me, I do so hope the work and the dedication of the association and its allies soon results in both prevention and a cure for this most debilitating disease.”
As the 2006 season closes, Juli joined the Alzheimer’s Association and Genworth leaders to mark this $21,000 donation. She urged everyone involved with golf — especially women’s golf — to not let the year end without making a contribution honoring Patty’s life and career. “Doing it now,” Inkster adds, “could double your gift to this worthy cause.” Genworth Financial will match, up to $5,000 in contributions, made through the Web site, http://www.roundtoremember.org/.
Alzheimer’s disease affects 4.5 million people over the age of 65 in the United States and as the 77 million baby boomers age that number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050.
