About Us

The Greater New Jersey Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is a founding member and affiliate chapter of the national Alzheimer's Association -- the largest national voluntary health organization dedicated to advancing research for the causes, treatments and prevention of Alzheimer's disease.  Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. We carry out our mission in the community by providing 24-hour Helpline services, professional staff care consultation, community and professional education and training programs, caregiver support groups, respite care assistance services, collaborating with research centers, and through increasing public awareness, and advocating on behalf of persons with Alzheimer's disease.

Our Mission

To eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Our Vision

A world without Alzheimer's disease.

Our History

The Greater New Jersey Chapter was first incorporated in 1985 as the Northern New Jersey Chapter.  Like most of the Alzheimer's Association affiliated chapters across the country, ours was founded by a small group of Alzheimer's disease family members who had come together to support one another and raise awareness and concern on behalf of Alzheimer's disease individuals and families.  In 2000, the Chapter merged with the then former Central New Jersey Chapter and the organization was renamed the Greater New Jersey Chapter.  The service area was expanded to include the majority of the state's counties and population base -- Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren.  We serve these communities through four office locations, and with the dedication of many volunteers and our highly skilled professional staff.

The Chapter is a designated 501(C) (3) by the IRS  and is independently governed by a very dedicated volunteer board of directors that is comprised of a diverse group of business and community leaders.  Today, over half a million people in New Jersey are living with Alzheimer's disease or are caring for someone with dementia.  With the baby-boomers aging and the state population continuing to expand, we know that this number will increase dramatically in the next several decades.  Alzheimer's disease is one of New Jersey's, and the country's, most critical health concerns.

What We Do

The Greater New Jersey Chapter provides information, assistance and support to individuals with Alzheimer's disease, their families and caregivers as well as health care professionals.  We provide many programs and services for the communities we serve, including: our 24-hour/7 day a week Helpline; Caregiver Respite Care Assistance program; Support Groups for Caregivers and Early-Stage Individuals; training and education for families and professionals; our MedicAlert+Safe Return Program that helps locate Alzheimer's disease individuals who may become lost due to memory loss and confusion; and many more.

Our programs and services are supported primarily from the generosity of our community donors.  In our most recently completed fiscal year, .76 cents of every dollar we raised went to directly supporting our mission-related programs and services.  To help us continue our work and support Alzheimer's disease individuals and their families, please click here to make a donation to the Greater New Jersey Chapter.

Our Brand

The brand of the Alzheimer's Association represents who we are and what we do.  It is both a visual symbol of our dual mission of people and science and a commitment that guides us in our daily work in research, advocacy, education, care consultation and support.  In February 2004, the Association's brand changed as part of a national public awareness campaign to make Alzheimer's a national priority.  While we have changed our look over the years, our vision has always been to "ONE DAY, HAVE A WORLD WITHOUT ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE."
