POSITION SUMMARY
Serve as principle architect of Chapter’s communication strategy and engine of execution for that plan. The fundamental task is to increase both public concern regarding Alzheimer’s disease and brand identity of the Alzheimer’s Association. Our Communications Director will provide counsel to Chief Executive Officer regarding all elements of Chapter communication including:
- Development and implementation of a year-round proactive earned media strategy;
- Leveraging nationwide public relations strategies to gain additional local market coverage;
- Creating unique public relations events and opportunities.
This position is located in the Mountain View office and is available as of November 3, 2008
ESSENTIAL LEADERSHIP FUNCTIONS
Media
Strengthen relationships with key media outlets throughout Chapter territory to increase earned media
Cultivate strong relationships with health, political, community, and consumer reporters in print, broadcast, ethnic and new media.
Newsletter
- Publish a Chapter Newsletter that meets the needs of both internal and external stakeholders.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of our current Newsletter and our strategy for publishing and distributing same
- Oversee the consolidation of four local Newsletter editions
- Evaluate e-Newsletter, modify and distribute as appropriate
Website
- Provide strategic direction to the Chapter website.
- Collaborate with our National office and Chapter staff to effectively provide outstanding timely and accurate online information and interaction for our public.
- Quickly and effectively answer inbound media inquiries in order to further develop reputation as “go to” resource.
- Create or revise materials (including pitches, releases, backgrounders, etc.) as needed to support above.
Spokesperson
Serve as chapter spokesperson as necessary.
Budget
Provide direction to cost effective budgeting and resource allocation to meet the communication needs of the Chapter
Team Work
- Provide guidance and effort to both program and development teams
- Develop effective partnerships with Regional Directors to enable them to deliver significant portions of the Chapters’ communications strategy
- Create and staff useful volunteer leadership team to support communications work.
Outcomes
We recognize the challenges and have identified key metrics for success. Desired outcomes, per our Strategic Plan, over a three year period:
- Develop meaningful baseline for media impressions
- Create plan to increase media impressions by 25% over two years
- Increase web visits 40%
- Increase Helpline calls 15%
- Increase Memory Walk participants 45%

Volunteers: Leveraging Impact
- Create the Chapter’s first Communications Committee or Task Force. Identify interested professionals and evangelists, and engage them in meaningful contributions to our work. Serve as a key resource and counsel to the Board of Directors regarding public awareness and brand identity.
- Develop a trained network of volunteer spokespeople on medical, advocacy, caregiver, early stage, and event issues.
Partners
The Communications Director will:
- Report directly to the Chief Executive Officer and will also partner successfully with other chapter staff leadership to champion our mission, diversity, advocacy and fund development; key partners will be our Chief Program Officer, Chief Development Officer, Director of Diversity and Director of Public Policy and Advocacy.
- Be an integral part of both our Leadership team and Chapter Management Team. Many of our nine offices operate in markets sometimes smaller and remote from Chapter headquarters and with very modest resources.
- Create relationships and processes to assist 9 offices, some in small, remote locations, to move public awareness and establish brand identity in their communities.

- Work collaboratively with our new outside marketing position.

- Maintain effective collegial relationships with our National Constituent Relations and communications team.
Skills and Attributes
- Strong knowledge of Northern California / Northern Nevada media market
- Established relationships in Bay Area and Sacramento media markets highly preferred
- Proven portfolio and success in implementing proactive earned media strategies, especially with limited budgets
- Outstanding written and oral communications skills
- Ability to thrive in a team environment
- Adept with computer technologies and managing media databases

Position Summary The Donor Services manager reports directly to the Chief Development Officer. This position manages all gift processing functions for the chapter and directly supervises donor services staff and volunteers. The Donor Services Manager performs data maintenance functions utilizing established procedures and business rules to ensure accuracy and standardization within Team Approach fundraising database system. This position also ensures integrity of all constituent data entered into donor database, and serves as liaison for all database and donor services questions to local Chapter offices, the National office and finance departments. This is an exempt, full-time position and is based in the Mountain View office.
Essential Job Functions • Answers all donor and donation related requests and tasks – 30% • Handles merge procedures, adds, deletes and corrects constituent records • Works with Accounting Manager and National Office on updating system codes • Processes all on-line and credit card donations on daily basis • Manages donor receipts and acknowledgment process • Oversees all gift processing functions - 45% • Codes contributions, manages gift batch distribution and credit card processing • Performs adjustments related to fundraising system • Performs close-of-month and close-of-Fiscal Year-procedures • Manages uploads betweens database systems as necessary • Completes special projects related to system clean-up • Processes chapter daily revenue and create related reports • Processes and monitors all gifts and corresponding matching gifts • Assesses volunteer needs and provides training on Donor Database – 15% • Manages and orients Donor Services volunteers and staff • Trains local staff on Team Approach database for address updates and mail list coding • Works closely with National staff to process queries for mailing lists for all Chapter locations as requested – 5% • Reviews query results to correct errors and eliminate duplicate entries • Ensures updated constituent information is entered in a timely manner • Staff front desk as per schedule, and perform other tasks as required – 5 %
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS/DEGREE REQUIRED/DESIRED, AND EXPERIENCE • Bachelors Degree or equivalent • 3 -5 years of work experience in non-profit or customer service field • Experience with Blackbaud/Raiser’s Edge, Team Approach or similar donor management systems • Experience supervising staff / volunteers • Basic understanding of accounting principles and business operations • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

POSITION TITLE: Associate Director of Major Gifts

AGENCY
The Alzheimer’s Association, Northern California and Northern Nevada is a non-profit committed to creating a world without Alzheimer’s disease and enhancing quality of life for those who live with it.
The Associate Director, Major Gifts (AD) in support of the Northern California/Northern Nevada Chapter is responsible for managing a core list of at least 80 major gift prospects, each capable of giving $10,000 or more. This position is based in the Mountain View, California office.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The Associate Director works within a regional team to:
1) Identify and qualify new prospects to their list, not only to maintain it against natural attrition, but to ensure a growth model for the overall program.
2) Cultivate individuals on their core list through substantial interactions (moves) that are designed to deepen and broaden relationships and encourage long-term commitment to the organization at the highest levels of philanthropy possible. The Associate Director must do so in a manner that is consistent with solid fundraising practices and in a donor-centric manner.
3) Solicit gifts above $10,000, balancing the organizations need for unrestricted, full-mission funds with the potential donors need to restrict in order to maximize their giving. The Associate Director must be capable of closing gifts of $1 million or more and able to work with multiple partners to advance complex donor relationships.
• Call, write letters and travel to visit face-to-face with generous annual donors to identify individuals capable of future major giving.
• Develop appropriate donor strategies in collaborative environment w/the Director
• Budget, and help set regional team goals for dollars raised and moves management objectives.
• Educate volunteers and board members to fundraising and involve them as partners in major gift development.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• 3 -5 years experience in major gift fundraising
• Demonstrated success in personal solicitation of major gifts
• Computer skills with Microsoft Suite programs and the organizations intranet and donor database tools
• Solid interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills
• Frequent travel as needed
• Knowledgeable about Alzheimers disease and dementia, as well as Association programs and services (preferable)
