Understanding Dementia: Making Therapeutic Connections

The annual Caregiver Seminar is one of the Alzheimer's Association's most enlightening and enjoyable ways of helping both family and professional caregivers better understand the characteristics of dementia and how to care for the people who have it.  Each year, the Alzheimer's Association schedules experts in the area of dementia care to present a half-day seminar on caring for people with dementia.

About the Speaker

Noreen Gray has over 15 years experience working in dementia care facilities and currently serves as Director of Lifestyle Programming for HCR ManorCare. In this position, Ms. Gray teaches tools for connecting with residents to professionals who work carng for people with dementia. She views every exchange, event and encounter with the person with dementia as purposeful and potentially pleasurable. Throughout her career, she has sought to improve quality of life for individuals living with dementing illnesses by creating environments that support socialization and individuality. Ms. Gray is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on aging issues. She is a licensed nursing facility administrator and is certified to manage assisted living facilities in the state of Texas.

The seminar begins with a discussion of memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Ms. Gray will then discuss ways in which to meet the physical, emotional, social and environmental needs of the person with dementia. Ms. Gray will also offer ways to support dignity by modifying daily activities to maintain independence. These methods can be used in care facilities or for people with dementia who still live at home.

Family caregivers attend for just $10 (those needing a scholarship should call Patty Taylor at 940-767-8800.). Cost for health professionals is $35 and includes CEUs for 1 discipline. For other professionals not needing CEU's, the cost is $20. Approved CEUs include: Social Work, Activity Professionals, Nurses, Assisted Living Administration, Long-Term Care Administration and LPC's
