Reframing Dementia: Strategies to Find Hope and Strength in the Midst of Challenges

Dementia Does Not Mean a Future Void of Hope and Joy

Audette RackleyA diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia is devastating, but it does not mean a future void of hope and joy.  There is still life to be lived and enjoyed.  Through the work Audette Rackley, MS, CCC/SLP and other professionals at the Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas at Dallas, individuals are learning to redefine quality of life.  Individuals who have been diagnosed with early stage dementia do not want to focus on the diagnosis, rather on how they can stay engaged in life.

Ms. Audette Rackley will present a workshop, Reframing Dementia: Strategies to Find Hope and Strength in the Midst of Challenges, on Tuesday, October 5 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.  Ms. Rackley will share a research based approach on how to maximize abilities with people with dementia through combining drug therapies with cognitive stimulation.  She will also discuss how to identify preserved abilities in people with young on-set and early stage Alzheimer’s disease.

Ms. Rackley has presented at national, state and area meetings providing education to professionals and lay people on research findings, communication strategies and programs for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.  She is a lecturer in graduate level classes in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology on dementia signs and symptoms, communication changes and intervention techniques.  She has recently authored a book of stories of inspiration and hope from individuals living with Alzheimer’s called I Can Still Laugh.
