Special 4-Session Workshop for Caregivers
Being a caregiver for an individual with dementia will take you on a most remarkable journey. Each day will present new options, challenges, rewards and surprises. Days will be filled with laughter, sadness, hugs, guilt and love. However, as the disease progresses a subtle shift will often occur and more challenges will be encountered, unwanted surprises will increase, options tend to decrease and rewards seem to disappear. This shift often results in diminished care for the individual with Alzheimer’s because the caregiver is burdened with feelings of hopelessness, guilt, weariness and an overwhelming sense of aloneness.
Knowledge is a powerful and necessary weapon when battling Alzheimer’s. A person who possesses knowledge of the disease and the numerous issues associated with the disease will be a stronger, healthier caregiver. One of the most effective ways to provide assistance to caregivers is through education. “Mapping The Journey” is a workshop created specifically for family caregivers. Experts in the field will provide information on the following: an overview of dementia, medications, behavior changes, caregiving strategies, nutrition, community resources, safety, legal and financial issues.
This workshop is conducted in 4-week blocks: meeting once a week for 4 weeks. The sessions are offered throughout our 40-county area. The next series is scheduled for October 2009 in Wichita Falls. Details are available here.
