Alzheimer's Disease: Enhancing Care - Advancing Research

research_imageThe Alzheimer’s Association 2011 Spring Symposium was held Thursday, March 31, 2011, at the Riley Conference Center on the campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  The Spring Symposium is the area’s premier source for up to date, relevant information about Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia.

Handouts are NOW available.  Please note that not all sessions may have handouts available.

Each year the Spring Symposium features as its keynote speaker, a nationally recognized expert in the field of Alzheimer’s research and treatment.  In 2011, Creighton H. Phelps, Ph.D., Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Center Programs, Division of Neuroscience, National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health was the keynote speaker.  Dr. Phelps discussed current advances in Alzheimer’s research and described his personal involvement in redefining diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer’s and related disorders.

About the Keynote Speaker

Dr. Phelps is currently coordinating a project involving the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association to redefine diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer’s type dementia, mild cognitive impairment and preclinical stages of neurodegenerative diseases.   Redefining these criteria with modern technologies and the latest advances will provide standards that move the field further in the direction of early detection and treatment.

brain_imageDr. Phelps worked for the national office of the Alzheimer’s Association as Vice President for Medical and Scientific Affairs, and became Senior Vice President in 1991.  In that position, he directed the research grant program, supervised the development of the Benjamin Green-Field National Alzheimer’s Library, and helped to set scientific policies of the Association.  In recent years, he has helped to coordinate the development of major initiatives related to the genetics and genomics of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
