Professionals Provide Firsthand Perspective in
Workshops for Alzheimer’s Financial and Legal Planning
The Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York will present a two-part workshop entitled Legal and Financial Planning for Alzheimer’s Disease at 10:30 a.m. on February 13 and 27 at 325 Columbia Street in Hudson. The program, which is free and open to the public, is hosted by NY Connects and Columbia County Office for the Aging, and will be presented by Hudson native and Pierro Law Group, LLC founder Attorney Lou Pierro and Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York Director of Programs and Services Bill Hinrichs. While the workshop is one often offered by the Alzheimer’s Association, this one offers a special perspective. Both Pierro and Hinrichs have experienced firsthand the affects of the disease on loved ones and family members.
“Caring for aging parents, relatives or friends living with Alzheimer’s disease is the hardest job you were never trained for,” said Pierro, whose mother, Geneva, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. His family’s experience in caring for his mother and seeking local resources was full of lessons. Following her death in 2005, the Pierro Law Group established the Geneva Y. Pierro Memorial Alzheimer’s Family Forum to help educate families and caregivers in the region. Further, Lou Pierro became active in the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York serving on the board of directors, and the firm raises money for the Columbia-Greene Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Lou hopes that through education, his experience and knowledge can help other families and caregivers be proactive, access resources and make informed decisions while caring for a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Hinrichs’ mother, Eileen Constance Garner Hinrichs, also died of Alzheimer’s disease. Together, the two can provide an insider’s perspective on how they planned with their loved ones and what they might have done differently in retrospect.
While the program is free, attendees must register in advance by calling or emailing contact Jamie Mott at Jamie.Mott@alz.org or 518.867.4999 x209.

Atria, The Plains, Sunny Buchman, The Procaks
and Paul Wajda Recipients of ALZNEY Annual Awards
Top Cap Region Walk Fundraisers Also HonoredAlzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York presented its annual awards on Wednesday, January 25 at its “Purple Tie Affair” at Treviso in Albany. An excellent crowd sported purple ties, purple coats, purple scarves—even a little purple hair—in consolidation with the awardees in the fight against Alzheimer’s.
The Association’s Philanthropy Award, Corporate was presented to Atria Senior Living. With three facilities in the Association’s service 17-county service area, Atria provided over $9000 in sponsorship, consistently fields large teams at Walk, provide transportation for the annual Advocacy Day, and hold their own third party fundraisers, include a Wine Pull last autumn, to support the work of the Association.
Sunny Buchman received the Association’s Philanthropy Award, Individual. Over the past several years, Mrs. Buchman has individually raised over $14000 for the Adirondack Region Walks to End Alzheimer’s and has secured more than $8000 in sponsorship. Most remarkably, Mrs. Buchman worked with her husband throughout his battle with Alzheimer’s to produce a book for caregivers, which she completed after his passing last hear. That book, Precious Window of Time, has been called “a manual of uplifting tips and techniques for not only maintaining, but strengthening a relationship with a loved one, and deepening that love. “ Mrs. Buchman self-published their work, selling out the first printing of 3000. It is now available online and in local bookstores, and all proceeds benefit the Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern New York.
Drew and Linda Procak receive the Association’s Outstanding Volunteer Award for being “the go-to team” of volunteers throughout the year. The Procaks have volunteered for the association for over four years and have worked at Walks, conferences and galas, as well as assisting with administrative tasks in the office. The day before the 2011 Capital Region Walk to End Alzheimer’s the Procaks assembled hundreds of “promise flowers” over the course of nearly an entire day!
The Plains at Parish Homestead received the Association’s Community Advocate Award. The Plains at Parish has been a consistent supporter since their opening several years ago, serving as a point of service location and holding monthly education programs for both residents and community members. They hold their own mini-walk annually and have served as the location for the Leatherstocking Region Walk for two years (with the third coming this spring). Their annual dance and ornament sales benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, and their staff members consistently turn out to support other fundraisers in the area benefiting the Association.
The Association’s highest award, the Lisa Goldberg Memorial Award, was presented to Paul Wajda. Goldberg was a beloved dedicated longtime Association board member credited with helping to keep the mission alive during some very lean years, and the award is given to an individual who reflects her character and dedication to the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association. Mr. Wajda joined the Association board in 2005, quickly taking on a leadership role as treasurer during a difficult fiscal situation. He was a large contributor to the turn-around in that fiscal situation and went on to become board chair in 2010. “He always led with kindness, understanding and compassion and civility,” said Association Executive Director David Gregoire in presenting the award. “He knew the hard work the staff and volunteers faced and would give them encouragement and thanks. His devotion to the association is truly representative of Lisa and her legacy.”
The evening also provided an opportunity to recognize the top corporate and family teams and top individual fundraiser for the 2011 Capital Region Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The top three corporate teams were: 1) Kingsway Community ; 2) SEFCU; and 3) The Empire Office of Realty USA. Top family teams were: 1)Bill’s Walkers; 2) 4Dad4Pepe; and The Forget Me Nots. Top individual fundraisers were: Bill Hinrichs, Mary Socha and Anne Frey.
