About professional training
The Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter is the recognized regional leader in providing current, accurate and detailed information about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and is committed to meeting the continuing education needs of healthcare professionals throughout the region. Our knowledgeable and experienced staff frequently provides convenient, customized educational programs for caregivers who work in the many healthcare facilities in this region. “With our expertise in their area, we consider it an essential part of our mission to offer educational opportunities for professionals who are seeking to include their knowledge about how to best care for person with dementia,” noted Salli Bollin, executive director the Northwest Ohio Chapter.
“We accomplish this in a variety of ways. It can be as simple and easy as providing information, books, videos and other resources from our lending library. But often people need a more formal, comprehensive education environment. We are very pleased to frequently be invited into families to provide customized training program for staff, which allows these professional caregivers to share their own experiences and ask questions of our Chapter’s professional staff, Ms. Bollin said. “And a few times each year, we present major education programs and conference where Northwest Ohio caregivers can learn directly from leading experts from around the country.”; A workshop can be designed to satisfy State of Ohio mandates for Assisted Living training.
In-Service Staff Training
Our knowledge and experienced educational staff provides interactive programs to meet your in-service needs, at the workplace or elsewhere. Classes meet the needs of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, in home health providers, senior centers, adult day centers, clergy/parish nurses, MR/DD staff. Law enforcement/first responders, social service agencies, financial institutions and other who need to know about Alzheimer’s disease, taking care of the caregivers and other issues.

Training for Professional Caregivers
A Hatful of Activities: Workshop for Health Care Professionals
A half day workshop designed to help health care professionals increase their knowledge and plan quality activity programs for individuals with dementia. Highlighted wil be ways to know when and how to blend groups of people with dementia with those who do not have dementia.

Alzheimer's Respite Care Training Program:
The two-hour “Initial” course provides comprehensive information needed to care for the individual with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. Topics covered will include an overview of dementia, effective communication techniques, providing quality activities and meeting personal care, dietary and safety needs. Environmental influences and behavioral changes, along with caregiver issues and community resources will be covered.
The one-hour “Review” course is designed as a refresher for those who have already completed “the initial” four-hour course. Topics covered will include new diagnostic and treatment modalities, updates on research and community resources, as well as a review of communication and general care techniques. A certificate of completion will be given at the end of each course. Pricing for the initial course is $15, and $10 for the review course.

Web-based training programs
CARES: A Dementia Caregiving Approach
This affordable, Web-based program has six one-hour training modules that are geared primarily to direct care workers, particularly nursing assistants. Each module uses text and streaming video to illustrate how to best care for people with dementia living in residential care settings. Topics include:
