2013 Update on Part the Cloud and Alzheimer's Research

January 29, 2013

Continuing the conversation to advance research and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease, the Alzheimer’s Association together with "Part the Cloud" hosted a luncheon at the Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club in Menlo Park, Calif. on Jan. 29, 2013. The event, known as Part the Cloud, created an atmosphere to inspire Silicon Valley entrepreneurs to step-up and take aim at fighting Alzheimer’s disease. The luncheon featured the encouraging words of Mark K. Shriver and research updates from Michael W. Weiner, M.D., and provided the opportunity to present awards to Pharmatrophix, Inc., and Adam Boxer, M.D., Ph.D. In addition, funds from Part the Cloud will go to support the Whole Genome Sequencing project as part of the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI).

"Knowing that funds raised at our 2012 'Part the Cloud' Gala are already at work in our community and will make an immediate impact on the course of research for this disease is a fantastic accomplishment," said Michaela Hoag, chair of Part the Cloud. "Our goal is to continue to motivate guests who attended this year’s luncheon to donate to move the needle in the fight to end Alzheimer’s."

2012 Gala Highlights

In an effort to help accelerate critically needed Alzheimer's research in the Bay Area as well as raise awareness about this terrible disease, the Alzheimer's Association held Part the Cloud, a volunteer-led, star-studded evening of entertainment and inspiration, on May 5, 2012 at the Rosewood Sand Hill. The event, which raised nearly $2 million for Alzheimer's research in Northern California, featured a live performance by American icon and living legend Tony Bennett, with appearances by Bill Walton, Joan Baez, Mickey Hart, Terry Moran, Virginia Madsen and well-known local celebrities including Football Hall of Famers Steve Young, Ronnie Lott, and San Francisco Giants Manager Bruce Bochy. Part the Cloud was created by Alzheimer's advocate and philanthropist, Michaela (Mikey) Hoag. "The outpouring of generous support was so unexpected and the evening was beyond my wildest dreams," said Ms. Hoag. "My hope, is that the monies raised for research efforts in Northern California– in the capable hands of the Alzheimer's Association– will help move the needle for a world without Alzheimer's."

2013 Part the Cloud Luncheon

Part the Cloud raised awareness and inspired attendees to join us in tackling the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, the only disease in the top ten causes of death without a way to prevent it, cure it, or slow its progression. Our goal is to educate as well as fundraise, and to inspire Silicon Valley entrepreneurs to take aim at this disease. The mission of Part the Cloud is to fund Alzheimer's research in Northern California with the highest probability of slowing, stopping or ultimately curing Alzheimer's disease.

Highlights from the evening included:

  • More than 300 of Silicon Valley's most influential gathered at the Rosewood Sand Hill hotel in Menlo Park to raise awareness for Alzheimer's disease and much needed funding for research in Northern California.
  • ABC News "Nightline" news anchor, Terry Moran, warmed up the crowd as evening emcee and helped raise almost $1 Million on-site contributing to the nearly $2 Million raised overall at the event.
  • Actress and Alzheimer's Advocate, Virginia Madsen helped rally the crowd by offering to spend a day winery hopping with any bidders at the $25,000 level after her offer.
  • Sponsor Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry dazzled the ladies in the audience with a 64" pearl strand giveaway one per guest at each of the 30 tables.
  • Tony Bennett took the stage and performed hits including I Left My Heart in San Francisco and The Way You Look Tonight, and It Had to Be You to a captivated audience.
  • After the main event, guests moved inside the venue for a special "After Party" with SRO performances by Joan Baez and Grateful Dead drummer, Mickey Hart. Basketball great, Bill Walton joined the musicians on stage and wowed the crowd with his musical talent. The crowd responded to Joan's stirring rendition of The Night They Drove Ol Dixie down by joining in a full-fledged sing-a-long.

NEW! A luncheon will be held on January 29, 2013 to celebrate the 2012 event.
