Assessing a Protocol to Strategically Support Family Caregivers

Previous research has not provided clear guidelines for assessing caregivers' needs, nor for linking them with services that address their specific situations in caring for people with dementia.

Dr. Rhonda J. V. Montgomery, Ph.D., and colleagues will assess an evidence-based management protocol with family caregivers and organizations. The team will interview 250 caregivers who are served by 84 care managers or family specialists from aging and disability agencies in three states. Interviews with caregivers and care managers will be conducted at various points during the one-year study.

The results will contribute to the understanding of effective caregiver intervention. This work will hopefully lead to improved health and emotional well being for people caring for those with dementia.
