2008 Everyday Technologies for Alzheimer Care Grant
Recent research has shown that older adults can rewire their brains as the result of cognitive exercises and training. This may help delay age-related cognitive decline and various forms of dementia.
Holly B. Jimison, Ph.D., and colleagues will build on previous work with adaptive computer games and Web-based health coaching to create protocols for physical exercise, nutrition and sleep management as part of an overall, tailored cognitive health plan for older adults.
The researchers will evaluate the effects of their coaching program on 50 people over the age of 65 who use it for one year in their homes, with the hope of demonstrating the effectiveness of such programs. Delaying cognitive decline, which is the number one concern of older adults, can dramatically improve their quality of life and reduce the large financial burden associated with aging and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
