Caring for an elderly relative or friend can be a personal or family challenge filled with questions, concerns, anxiety and confusion. It can also be a wonderful journey into family caregiving that ultimately brings peace, joy and satisfaction.
Caregiver Support Services, a program of the Alzheimer's Association, is the official Caregiver Resource Center for Monroe County.

Respite Care
Need a break from care giving? The Alzheimer’s Association offers respite care to help relieve families of their care giving responsibilities during times of need. Respite services are short-term and intended to provide the caregiver with a break from their caregiving role, as well as offer an opportunity for the caregiver to meet his/her own personal needs. Respite options include in-home care, care at an adult day program, and overnight stay in a facility.
Families are eligible for one of the three respite options listed below:
In-Home Care: A Dementia Care Specialist who has been approved by the Alz-heimer’s Association can provide respite care in your home for up to 20 hours/year at no charge. Our goal is to fill respite requests and alert families of the coverage 48 hours before the service is to be delivered; however, coverage cannot be guaranteed.
Day Program: The Alzheimer’s Association will cover the cost for you to send your loved one to either Seniorsfirst Social Day Service at Valley Manor, Unity Adult Day Service at St. Bernard’s, or Adult Day Club at Bethany Village for up to five (5) days. The day programs have had extensive training through the Alzheimer’s Association.
Overnight: The Alzheimer’s Association will cover $50/night for your loved one to stay overnight at an Assisted Living Facility or $100/night to stay overnight in a skilled nursing facility for up to 3 nights.
Respite is also available in the home for caregiver to attend an Association-sponsored education program; receive counseling through the Association; or to attend a support group meeting.
For assistance with your respite care needs as outlined above please call our 24-hour helpline at 800-272-3900.
Respite services are supported by the Department of Health.
