We offer several educational programs for families and individuals facing Alzheimer’s, as well as community members. Most of these programs, described below, are free of charge. For information contact Emily at the Big Sioux Chapter.

Dementia Care Training


The 3rd Monday of each month
at the Alzheimer's Association Big Sioux Chapter office located at 420 Chambers Street in Sioux City, IA.  The cost is $45.00 per person for the six-hour training.  Contact Emily Garber at 712.279.5802 or emily.garber@alz.org for more information or to register.

Please call Emily to register by the 2nd Monday of each month for that month’s training—there must be at least three individuals total registered for each session before the training can be given each month.  This does NOT mean each facility needs three individuals to attend, there just needs to be a total of at least three individuals signed up for each training.
 

The Caregiver's Journey

Purpose: To explain the disease process and what to expect, communicating with your loved one, your changing role as caregiver, planning for the future and local resources and support services.  The focus will be on managing the changes of the disease and adapting life to attain the highest quality of life possible.

Objectives:

  • Enhance a basic knowledge of dementia.
  • Define communication techniques to support your loved one.
  • Learn ways to care for yourself.
  • Learn to adapt to your changing role as caregiver.
  • Understand the importance of planning for the legal, financial and health future.
  • Learn about care services, education and support programs that can help.

Partnering with Your Doctor

Purpose: To present strategies and tools to help patients and care partners become more active partners with their primary care physicians.

Objectives:

  • Explain the meaning and purpose of a healthcare partnership.
  • Put into action eight strategies that strengthen a healthcare partnership.
  • Use the care, medication, and appointment logs.

Maintain Your Brain

Purpose: When people think about staying fit, they generally think from the neck down. But the health of your brain plays a critical role in almost everything you do: thinking, feeling, remembering, working, and playing – even sleeping.  The good news is that we now know there’s a lot you can do to help keep your brain healthier as you age. These steps might also reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia.

Maintain Your Brain can help you learn how to live a brain healthy lifestyle.

Objectives:

  • To learn how the brain works and changes with age.
  • To learn how the brain and heart are connected.
  • To learn how social connections and emotional health affect your brain.
