The Alzheimer’s Association offers both online and classroom training for professional care providers. Studies show staff trained in dementia care are able to provide better quality of life for residents and have increased confidence, productivity and job satisfaction. Our training programs utilize the Alzheimer’s Association Dementia Care Practice Recommendations which promote the principles of person-centered care.

Current Classes for Professionals


Online education

CARES® Dementia Care online training offers training in the Basics™, Advanced Care™, Dementia-Related Behavior™, and Activities of Daily Living™.

These training programs offer the additional option of the Alzheimer’s Association essentiALZ® certification, an online individual certification program providing recognition for knowledge of quality dementia care practices. To access CARES and essentiALZ programs, go to

Classroom Training for Professional Care Providers

Train the Trainer: Building Creative Caregivers ©

This award winning program is designed for staff educators who will train their team on state mandated basic dementia care topics. 6-hour class includes newly revised training manual, teaching resources, group exercises and DVD with copies of reference material and exercises. (class size 6 minimum)

Cost: $450 per person

On Site Consultation & Education

Person Directed Care Certificate Program

Advanced course for communities looking to further their culture of person centered care. This 12 hour course covers topics that help understand the changing landscape of dementia care with a focus on how to incorporate person directed dementia care best practices. Focus is placed on helping caregivers develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Can be offered in 6, 2-hour classes or 3, 4-hour classes for up to 25 participants.

Cost: $2,300/community including plaque + $5/graduate for an Alzheimer’s pin

How to Care for People with Dementia

This 4-hour course briefly covers the state-mandated topics for dementia care workers is a great refresher course or to begin Alzheimer’s and dementia training. Offered classroom style at the Alzheimer’s Association. (class size 10 minimum)

Cost: $75/person

Intimacy and Sexuality

This 3-hour course can help professional caregivers better understand and respond to expressions of intimacy and sexuality in people with dementia. Offered classroom style at the Alzheimer’s Association.
(class size 10 minimum)

Cost: $60/person

Environmental Design & Program Enhancement Consultation

Customized consultation on environmental design to enhance and support quality of life for those residents who have dementia, utilizing best practices developed from the national Alzheimer’s Association as well as the Pioneer Network’s principles of service regarding sustainable culture change.

Cost: $175/hr

One-time Site Consultation

Alzheimer's Association will spend 2 hours on site in walk-through and written recommendations for programmatic and environmental design will be provided. If future training occurs as a result of the walk-through, a $250 credit will be applied for future training.

Cost: $750

*All onsite consultation services are offered on a contract basis with our Alzheimer’s Association Consultants and Professional Educators.   For on-site training, the Alzheimer's Association will charge mileage within the St. Louis metro area and $75 per hour for up to 4 hours of extended travel outside of St. Louis metropolitan area.

In addition to these programs, the Alzheimer’s Association partners with Lifework Transitions, LLC to offer leadership coaching for organizations committed to culture change. The PILLARS of Excellence training is designed to reinforce culture change concepts for leadership, managers and directors who set the tone of a caring community. When leaders create healthy work environments, care staff are engaged and motivated and the families and residents feel it.

The P.I.L.L.A.R.S. of Excellence (1½ hr)

This highly recommended prerequisite and interactive workshop is designed to serve as the foundation for sustaining person-directed memory care. This initial session focuses on an overview of The 7 P.I.L.L.A.R.S. of Excellence specifically designed for leaders, health care professionals, and their teams along the adult care continuum who are committed to sustaining their Culture Change journeys.

Cost: $750

Leadership Culture Change Institute

All 7 P.I.L.L.A.R.S. of Excellence sessions (1½ hr each) Individual sessions (1½ hr each)

Cost: $3,500 OR $750/session

Coaching (2 hrs/mo)

Coaching sessions for leaders will provide one-on-one sessions around strategies for team engagement, community-wide integration of culture change practices, all with a strengths-focused perspective.

Cost: $400/mo (3 month commitment)
