About family education classes

We offer several educational programs for families and individuals facing Alzheimer’s, as well as community members.  Our comprehensive array of programs cover a variety of topics from the basics of Alzheimer’s to advanced caregiving issues.  The St. Louis Chapter offers education classes in IllinoisSt. Charles County and East Central Missouri, Southeast Missouri, St. Louis; and via the web. The programs, described below, are free of charge.  If you are interested in having the Alzheimer's Association present an education program for your organization simply request a speaker.  

Family education class descriptions

Getting Connected: A great place for everyone to start—learn about Alzheimer’s Association services and other community resources.

Know the 10 Signs: Early diagnosis is important.  Learn the difference between normal aging and the warning signs of dementia, and receive information on how to seek diagnosis.

The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s:  Review of memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease that includes information on the latest research, treatment and diagnosis.

Care Options: Caregivers learn about which care option will fit the needs of their loved one.  Covers information on Adult Day Care, Home Care, Assisted Living, Nursing Home Care and more.

Behavior & Communication: Caregivers learn how to figure out what triggers certain behaviors like resistance to care, anxiety, wandering and aggression.  Discover more effective ways to connect with your loved one.

Legal & Financial: Lead by an attorney, this program features legal tools like advance directives, powers of attorney and estate planning.

How To: Practical Solutions: Covers daily issues that caregivers might be facing related to safety, dressing, bathing, activities and more.  Bring your questions.

Elearning: Programs are available online from the comfort of your own home.  Just sign in and start learning. 

Living with Alzheimer’s for Caregivers: Caregivers will receive information about providing care, communicating, developing resources, working with your care team and providing an optimal end-of-life experience.*

Community Education

The Alzheimer’s Association Speakers’ Bureau is an extensive network of volunteers and staff who deliver quality educational presentations throughout our service area.  Our audiences include civic and service organizations, fraternal clubs, faith-based groups, health care agencies, support groups, schools/academic institutions and social services agencies.  To schedule a speaker for your organization please contact Ruthie Rochman, at 314.801.0446.
