Our history

In 1983, a small group of Knoxville area families began to meet informally in an effort to understand and cope with the ravaging effects of Alzheimer's disease. Through their sharing and involvement, they gradually began to realize that living from crisis to crisis is not an inevitable outcome of this disease. Together, the group was able to anticipate, confront, and solve seemingly insurmountable problems with a renewed sense of hope, confidence and accomplishment.

Today, the Eastern Tennessee Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association continues that tradition of self-help and mutual aide through the voluntary affiliation of dedicated family members and professionals working together to face the challenges presented by Alzheimer's disease. We are one of 78 chapters nationwide and serve 26 counties in the East Tennessee area. Our mission is to provide support and assistance to persons with Alzheimer's disease, their families and care partners, and to support research efforts to prevent, treat and cure Alzheimer's disease.
